The next day came to the old Qin residence. Lewis didn't get a wink of sleep, a problem he had dealt with in the past. But this time, he didn't want to find a solution. Lewis' already decided to take away Devon's life support, so everyone wore formal black clothes and headed to the hospital where she was admitted.
"Young master," Derek called just before Lewis could enter the ICU. Lewis looked back and his eyes instantly fell on the person behind Derek.
Quentin. He was in a wheelchair while Gabriella was pushing it.
Lewis just bowed his head lightly but said nothing. Derek already informed him about Quentin's request. Since Lewis owed the man, he didn't want to take away this from him.
With that, Lewis and Quentin were assisted in sanitation. Gabriella remained outside while Derek pushed Quentin's wheelchair. Once they entered the room, there were already some people inside. The doctors and nurses, Marshall, Dion, and his other brothers, and a priest.
Derek wheeled Quentin inside while Lewis stayed on the spot. He clenched his hand as his eyes landed on the woman lying on the bed. A sharp exhale slipped past his lips as he walked towards her slowly. His every step felt heavy, and each time, the last pieces of his heart collapsed.
Lewis kept his eyes on her until she came into sight. His heart instantly ached at the sight of her. Her chest was moving in an unnatural rhythm, with tubes injected into her mouth and nose.
"My love..." he whispered with a shaking voice, about to break down in tears. "My poor baby..."
The second he called her, Dion looked away as he wiped the tears from his eyes. Even Marshall had to steel his heart at this tragic scene. Not just them, but this... broke everyone's heart. Bella, who was also invited, covered her lips to muffle her cry.
"Mister Qin," the priest called in a sad voice, finding this situation heartbreaking as well. "Shall we start?"
Lewis raised his gaze at him, letting out a sharp exhale before he nodded. The priest offered a forced smile as he nodded back, looking at everyone present.
"We have gathered here today to witness the union of Mister Qin Lewis and Miss Lin Devon..." The priest proceeded to the ceremony of Lewis and Devon's wedding. A day that should be celebrated with smiles; a beautiful memory to recall. But this... was just too painful to watch.
"I, Qin Lewis, take you, Lin Devon, to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life," Lewis recited his marriage vow as he slid the ring inside her finger carefully. Since Devon couldn't talk, they skipped most of the bride's part.
The ceremony didn't take that long as Lewis then guided her thumb to mark their marriage license before he placed his thumb mark next to hers. Once that was over, Lewis let out another exhale as he gaze at her with a bitter smile.
The priest swallowed down a mouthful of saliva. "I now pronounced you, husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride." Never in the Priest's life did he ever think that saying these words would sound so painful. Well, not just him, but everyone inside this room didn't know a wedding could be this heart-wrenching.
Lewis smiled at her, caressing her forehead before planting a kiss on it. His eyes instantly streamed with tears as his trembling lips stayed there for a long time. Instead of applause and congratulatory remarks, sniffled and tears from the witnesses of this union reigned.
"I love you," Lewis rested his forehead against hers, eyes shut while letting the tears drip to her. "I will always love you, my love. Be it then and now, and even in the future, my heart will always be yours."
Quentin looked down. He knew her wedding would bring him pain, but this... this wasn't the type of pain he expected. It would be better to see her get married to another man than see her get married before she dies.
"I'm sorry, love. I'm really, really, really sorry."
Everyone remained silent with tears rolling down their cheek. No one rushed Lewis because they knew what would happen after this ceremony. This groom... would become widowed in minutes.
When Lewis drew his head back and sniffed, wiping his tears with the back of his hand, he cast the doctor a look. The latter nodded as he walked closer to the side of the bed.
"Mister Qin, please do the honor," the doctor said while holding the tube that was injected into her mouth. Lewis winced as he mustered his courage to do it. With trembling hands, Lewis reached for the tube. The doctor cast the groom a look and nodded.
Lewis didn't take it out immediately. Instead, he stared at Devon, almost choking. He ground his teeth before slowly taking it out. After that, the doctor turned his head to his colleague.
"Wait," Lewis hesitated as he held her hand, but when the doctor looked back at him, he felt helpless. "I'm sorry. Go on."
The head doctor sported an apologetic look before he nodded. He then turned to the nurse and signaled her to turn off the machines that were sustaining her life. When the nurse got the green signal, she carefully shut the machine down that was pumping her chest.
In silence, the medical staff stared at the heart monitor and waited for the flat line to announce her time of death. They waited and waited until their brows creased. The head doctor moved closer to Devon as he took out his stethoscope.
"What is going on?" Lewis inquired as he watched the doctor check Devon's heart. Not just him, but every single one of them was baffled. They were told that once they shut down her life support, they would have to wait a bit for her heart to stop beating. But it was already over a minute and her heart rate was normal.
"Doctor," called Lewis with a shaking voice, watching the doctor raise his head slowly.
"Mister Qin, it seems we are wrong. Miss Lin didn't have a pulse, but that is because her heart was pumping weakly. We still need more time to figure what is going on." The doctors immediately beckoned his team to check her vitals and do another round of examinations. "Mister Qin, please give us some time. The staff will assist you out first."
Every one of them couldn't react quickly and they only snapped when they were being assisted outside. Lewis stayed on his spot as he looked at Devon blankly.
"Mister Qin." A nurse approached him but he didn't move in the slightest.
"Will she be fine?" he inquired under his breath.
"We still don't know yet, but this is a good sign, Mister Qin." Lewis turned his head to the nurse with eyes full of hope. "Don't worry, Mister Qin. We also hope that Miss Lin will be alright. We'll do our best."
With that being said, the nurse escorted him out. This bizarre, but not new in the medical field, gave Lewis and everyone hope for good news.. It doesn't matter for Lewis if the doctors failed to see a thing or two in this matter, as long as she was alive.
