Chapter 62 - Sheep Qin

"Then, should I kiss you?" he asked calmly, tilting his head to the side.

Her mind suddenly short-circuited while she blinked on the surface with no emotion. There was a long, dreading silence between them until Lewis finally broke it.

"I don't see you as a child," he said, tapping her forehead lightly as if to bring her back to reality. "I patted your head because that's all I can do for now."

"Oh." She nodded in understanding, swiftly creating distance between them. "You don't have to do anything, you've done more than I deserve," she said without looking at him.

"Just look at this vixen." Ghost Lin clicked her tongue in annoyance. "It's already been 62 chapters and romance is still far ahead."

"Derek will be here soon." Lewis diverted the subject, sensing that the air between was taking the awkward route. "I'll just finish some things, I'll be back."

Was what he said and sprung up to his seat and finished his preparation. While Lewis was busy with his morning rituals, Devon gazed down and stared at her knuckles that were on her lap.

Then, should I kiss you?

His words repeated in her mind, burning her face and ears. How could he suggest such intimate deeds between lovers? Oh no, why did she even berate him because of a pat on the head?

"Get yourself together, child," Ghost Lin muttered, shaking her head in disappointment. "You put this upon yourself, so atone."

"That's right," Devon murmured, nodding and agreeing with Ghost Lin. "I had been acting too freely, I'm forgetting my manners."

"Please oh holy deity, take me…" Ghost Lin lamented as she spread her arms while staring at the ceiling. "… I give up. Give my brains to this dense beloved child of yours."

Devon just ignored Ghost Lin as she let out a deep sigh again. Until now, she hadn't been acting like herself. In her previous life, she learned not to show the slightest emotions, as her angst was Quentin's pleasure. But in here, it was as if all emotions broke free from their cage and she could easily express them.

Whether they were from the fact that she was in a different world or just in a different body, Devon didn't know. But perhaps she really had to get a hold of herself and act like royalty.

With that in mind, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. When she opened them, a sharp glint flickered across her eyes and her face stoic without a trace of emotion.

"Woah…" Ghost Lin floated in front of her. "You're not sad anymore?"

"I am," Devon answered honestly, but her tone was nonchalant. "But I can't burden and worry my friend because…" she trailed off when Ghost Lin suddenly uttered;

"Fuck off," Her tone was deep and vicious, and her eyes didn't bear any life, as if life meant nothing to her.

"Pardon?"

"I don't like this fake bravado," Ghost Lin answered in the same bone-chilling tone. "I let you take over my body because it's You. Don't use my face for fakery. I can't stand it, and you know what I can do if I can't stand something or someone."

"Ghost Lin…" Devon bit her lower lip before her jaw tightened. Honestly, Ghost Lin's tone and gaze sent a shiver down her spine. However, her words moved her for reasons unknown.

It was as if Ghost Lin was fine if she was weak and naive, instead of pretending to be strong. Someone who could understand how hard it was to hide behind a mask.

"How foolish of me." Devon breathed out and chortled helplessly. "Of course, it'll worry him more if I suddenly shut myself off."

Ghost Lin just snapped her tongue as she floated back.

"I hate fake people, so just be yourself since that body's change is like a miracle for the people who knew me."

Devon glanced at Ghost Lin, who was floating while lying midair. It was hard to take Ghost Lin's words seriously with the sight of her, but Devon appreciated her ways to straighten her despite acting like a devil.

"Thank you," Devon whispered with a subtle smile before shifting her eyes towards Lewis. "You're going?"

Lewis raised his brow as it seemed she finally got a hold of herself. It gave him a conflicting feeling, but it was better that she's in a better mood now.

"Yes, Derek is waiting downstairs," he answered with a nod, seeing her stand up.

"I'll send you off then," she offered and gave him a sweet smile.

Lewis pressed his lips together and rocked his head. "Sure."

In the end, Lewis held her hand as they headed towards the main door. When he took a step outside, he turned and face her, holding the door with his hand while the other was on the jamb.

"Sleep some more. I told Mrs. Agnes to prepare your foods and snacks, and Dion will come over to look after you, alright?" he reminded her, feeling a little reluctant to leave without saying a word.

"Alright." She nodded, holding her hands behind her.

He stared at her for a moment and nodded. "Alright, then…" but before he could close the door, Devon suddenly took a step forward.

"Wait," she blurted out, and he turned around, arching his brow. He asked, "what?"

Devon hesitated for a second, mustering her courage before she said, "I will wait for you, so come back."

Those were enough for him to finish everything immediately so he could return on time. He nodded and smiled.

"I will." His eyes suddenly fell on her lips but held back as he pressed his lips and stretched them broader. It was too soon for them for that. They might look like a married couple, but she's still not aware of that.

"I'll call you during my breaks," he said, and left when he saw her nod.

Once the door closed and the sound of the automatic lock reached Devon's ears, there was just this deafening silence. Emptiness enveloped her heart instantly, gritting her teeth.

"Sucks…" Ghost Lin suddenly spoke, breaking the deafening silence that was devouring Devon little by little. "… no kiss until the end. Minus ten points for Sheep Qin."

Devon smiled as her eyes softened. She turned around to see Ghost Lin floating.. "I'm not alone," she whispered, as she was never thankful for Ghost Lin's presence.
