Chapter 28 - Boyfriend (1)
Below them, wave after wave of zombies passed by the hotel. The screaming fell silent as the sky gradually darkened.
The street lights were still on. The busy roads during the day were now silent. There weren't any moving cars, only a few cars awkwardly parked in the middle of the road.
Nearby, the residential apartments were practically dark. There were only flickering shadows from the street lights. Even if there were people inside the apartments, no one dared to turn on a light.
Countless Ningcheng residents uneasily hid at home. They hoped they could safely pass the first night of the apocalypse.
The zombies could smell and hear better than they could see. The streets at night were their territory.
And yet, Lu Xingchi picked up his crossbow to leave. "Let's go."
The lights in the hotel were as bright as ever, and it was silent behind the presidential suite's heavy door. The only elevator's doors were tightly shut.
Lu Xingchi led Bei Nuan and Du Ruo to open the emergency exit door. They went down the spiral staircase, keeping their steps as light as possible.
When they were about to reach the underground parking garage, they heard sounds from above. It sounded as if someone had opened the emergency exit and screamed into the passage.
Lu Xingchi raised his head before Bei Nuan and Du Ruo could react.
The railing of the metal staircase twisted and extended all the way to pierce the incoming zombie's calf. The zombie hadn't been guarded at all. It stumbled and fell through the gap in the railing. In an instance, it fell from upstairs to the third level of the underground garage.
It was a bit tragic.
Bei Nuan was startled by the falling zombie. "Why did he jump down? Did he think he was a bird?
Lu Xingchi glanced beneath them. "There's probably cognitive impairments after becoming a zombie."
Lu Xingchi opened the door to the underground garage.
The garage was practically empty. They quickly got into the jeep and drove out.
The sound of the engine was especially harsh on the city's quiet roads. Group after group of zombies was attracted by this sound. They came out from the shadows of the streets and relentlessly chased after the jeep.
However, even the greatest sprinter in the world couldn't keep up with a car. It didn't take long for the zombies to be left behind.
Lu Xingchi drove the jeep around the broken down cars on the road. The jeep barreled down the road like a hurricane.
Bei Nuan thought; unless the system interfered, they wouldn't be able to continue down this road.
In the novel, they would soon meet someone that would join their team.
The identity of this person was quite special to Bei Nuan.
It was the novel's Bei Nuan's boyfriend. Although there was no confession, the relationship between them was already fairly ambiguous and obvious.
His presence was the reason why Lu Xingchi hadn't kicked Bei Nuan out of the team despite her constantly dragging them down.
Sure enough, they couldn't continue down the road once they reached the outskirts of the city.
A large vehicle had hit the metal bridge. The bridge body had fallen down, blocking countless cars. The cars were empty now. Looking at the traces on the ground, she could see that a desperate battle had taken place here.
Lu Xingchi had them get out of the car, and then he gestured to Bei Nuan.
She didn't need his reminder. She patted the jeep and stored it into her pocket space.
They had only walked for a short distance when they heard the roar of zombies and the screams of humans. The sounds came from a small farm-style restaurant on the side of the road. A group of zombies were gathered outside by the wooden door.
The zombies were doing their best to squeeze through the door, and the people inside the restaurant were doing their best to keep the door closed. The two sides were currently competing.
The gap between the door and the door frame was getting bigger. The zombies worked together and strived to progress. It was obvious they had the upper hand.
The sound of Lu Xingchi and the others approaching attracted the zombies. A few of the zombies left behind their partners that were still pushing the door and rushed towards the fresh and yummy-smelling humans.
Lu Xingchi raised his crossbow and calmly shot down all of the zombies including the ones at the door.
Noticing the zombies were no longer pushing the door, the people in the restaurant poked their heads out to look. Seeing all of the fallen zombies on the ground, they were shocked.
