Chapter 39 - You're blind (3)

Lu Xingchi straightened up. "Do you have relatives anywhere? If so, I can send you there."

Bei Nuan smoothly answered, "I really don't have any. I grew up in an orphanage. My parents are dead."

Lu Xingchi grinded his teeth and smiled. His smile looked quite scary. "Don't always challenge my patience."

It seemed that he really could see through lies.

Bei Nuan thought it over and decided to tell the truth. "Although I didn't grow up in an orphanage, my mom got sick and died when I was little. My dad was the one that raised me."

What she said this time was the truth, but it wasn't the novel's Bei Nuan's life experience, it was her own.

"My dad treated me very well. He was super patient and taught me all kinds of things. He always had time to play with me. I didn't feel like I was missing anything even without a mom."

"Later on, when I was in middle school, my dad's coworker's boyfriend came to their workplace. The coworker and her boyfriend talked, but something went wrong, and the man took out a knife. The only person that dared to step forward was my dad. The man was subdued by my dad and apologized to his girlfriend. After my dad let go of him and was about to leave, he suddenly stabbed my dad in the back."

"He died on his way to the hospital, so my parents really are dead. I didn't lie."

Bei Nuan sincerely looked at Lu Xingchi.

"What happened after?" Lu Xingchi stared at her face as he asked.

"What after?"

"You didn't finish."

The big boss was really good with seeing through people's hearts. Bei Nuan reluctantly continued, "After my dad passed away, my tuition and living expenses became a problem. The police came to investigate. The woman's family was probably scared I would ask them for money, so they spread the rumors that my dad was interested in the woman and his intentions weren't pure. There were also rumors in his workplace that my dad had an ambiguous relationship with that woman and wanted to find me a stepmother."

Bei Nuan's tone was very calm. She wrapped it up with, "So then, it didn't even count as standing up for a just cause. It was considered an emotional dispute."

"And then?" Lu Xingchi asked again.

"There is no and then. I had a hard time afterwards, but my life got better. That is until I encountered the zombie outbreak. I'm done talking."

Lu Xingchi's expression didn't change as he watched Bei Nuan for a while. He suddenly stretched out his hand and gently patted her head.

Bei Nuan raised her head and pressed her head against his palm. She looked at him hopefully.

As a result, he said, "Go to sleep. I'll go find you a place when we go to Jiangcheng tomorrow."

Even after she shook out of such a tragic life experience, he was still leaving her in Jiangcheng? Bei Nuan sighed. She left the riverside and returned to the jeep. She lied down, but couldn't fall asleep.

And then? And then, when it was the 7-day period after her dad's death, other people were celebrating New Year. At that time, she lived in company housing provided by her dad's employer. That place didn't forbid setting off firecrackers. She could hear the sound of firecrackers from the neighboring yard.

That woman's family lived in the apartment next to hers. They specially went down to set off thousands of firecrackers to get rid of bad luck.

During the endless sound of the firecrackers, Bei Nuan cooked herself a bowl of noodles and finished it, bite by bite. From then on, she decided to live only for herself. The lives and deaths of others had nothing to do with her.

Moonlight came through the jeep's windows; it was as cold as snow. The moon illuminated everything without any favoritism. Bei Nuan thought about her dad and gradually fell asleep.
