Chapter 58 - It must have been an angel (2)
Early next morning, Lu Xingchi brought Bei Nuan to the underground parking garage and had her take out the jeep.
Du Ruo and Jiang Fei had suddenly changed their minds during breakfast and wanted to leave with Lu Xingchi.
Du Ruo said, "Bei Nuan should be safe here for the time being, so I'll go with you. After you find a safe place, I'll be there to urge you to come pick her up."
Jiang Fei had reached an agreement with Lu Xingchi. He would go with Lu Xingchi, and in return, they would head to Shuicheng first. There was someone he wanted to find there.
Bei Nuan knew who he was looking for. It was written in the book that Jiang Fei wanted to find his cellmate's son.
On the day the zombie virus broke out, the prison was in chaos. After the prisoners finally escape, that very loyal cellmate, who was bringing up the rear, got bitten by a zombie. That cellmate talked about his son every day. His son went to college in Shuicheng.
Before becoming a zombie, he had held Jiang Fei's hand and used his last breath to say his son's name. Thus, Jiang Fe decided to go to Shuicheng.
After breakfast, the three men were ready to leave.
Before leaving, Du Ruo held out his arms towards Bei Nuan. "We're leaving. Hug?"
"No way," Bei Nuan flatly refused.
Bei Nuan kept looking at Lu Xingchi. Biting her lower lip, she looked like a baby animal that was about to be abandoned.
Lu Xingchi was calm and composed and utterly unmoved.
Du Ruo looked at him and then at her. "You guys are silently staring at each other. Do you want to kiss again? No way, right?" He dragged Lu Xingchi away.
They went to the underground parking garage. Bei Nuan didn't send them off. She stood in place and watched them go downstairs.
Dr. Su went with Lu Xingchi and the others to the garage.
"You really don't plan on staying? Where are you going?" Dr. Su asked.
"We'll cross the river and go to the college in Shuicheng to the west of here." Lu Xingchi pointed at Jiang Fei. "We're helping him find someone."
"Shuicheng?" Dr. Su thought it over. "Before the internet died, I read news that the people on the other side of the river destroyed the connecting bridges to prevent the spread of the zombie virus. You guys might not be able to go there."
Du Ruo interrupted, "Let's worry about it when it happens. We'll take it one step at a time."
Dr. Su seemed to have many things to say to Lu Xingchi. On the way to the garage, he discussed the long-term development plan of this place with Lu Xingchi: strengthen the several doors, choose people to form a team to guard this place and search for supplies, and make preparations for when the water and gas was stopped.
They slowly walked to the underground parking garage. Lu Xingchi took a lap around the garage and pretended to choose a jeep whose doors were wide open. It looked as if the owner had abandoned the vehicle in a hurry.
Lu Xingchi went out to clear out the zombies, and then he bid Dr. Su farewell and drove away.
With the windows down, the cool morning breeze blew into the silent jeep as they gradually left the boundary of Jiangcheng.
"Doesn't it feel uncomfortable lying in there for such a long time?" Lu Xingchi suddenly spoke.
Du Ruo: "..."
Jiang Fei: "..."
Under the last row of the jeep, there was the thick sleeping bag that Bei Nuan had left for Lu Xingchi. The person inside the thick sleeping bag twisted like a bug and got up.
Bei Nuan burrowed out with messy hair.
"If you knew I was here, why didn't you speak earlier? I almost suffocated."
Bei Nuan sat down on the seat with the sleeping bag still wrapped around her and took in deep breaths of fresh air from the open window.
Lu Xingchi turned the steering wheel and parked on the side.
No way right? Bei Nuan was about to give up hope. He had already driven so far, and he still refused to bring her along?
Lu Xingchi leaned over and opened the front passenger seat's door.
"Come here," he said.
Bei Nuan obediently got out of the sleeping bag, exited the car, and climbed onto the front passenger seat.
"Which one of you had this idea?" Lu Xingchi began to interrogate.
Bei Nuan silently raised her hand.
Du Ruo was curious. "Lu Xingchi, how did you know? The sleeping bag is so thick, and she's so small. I think she hid quite well, no?"
"It's mainly because everyone's acting skills are too bad," Lu Xingchi bluntly answered, "Only Bei Nuan's acting was slightly better. Dr. Su was in collusion with you guys, right?"
Bei Nuan nodded with a guilty conscience. It was easy to persuade Dr. Su. All she had to do was pretend that she didn't want to part ways with her boyfriend.
