Chapter 60 - It must have been an angel (4)
Lu Xingchi drove all the way to the riverside. It was drizzling.
The petrichor in the air from the rain falling on the soil was invigorating. This scent was supposed to symbolize hope. Spring rain was a sign that there would be barns full of grains. Unfortunately, these continuous fields were doomed to be barren this year. No one would cultivate them.
Jiangcheng was right in front of them, but the way there was broken.
As Dr. Su had said, the bridge to cross the river had completely collapsed. Most of the bridge had sunk into the turbulent river.
Lu Xingchi drove the jeep along the river. They passed several bridges; all of them had been blown up.
Bei Nuan thought of this episode in the novel and suggested, "There'll always be boats by rivers. Let's find out if there's a dock nearby?
In troubled times, there would still be people that were busy making money. In the novel, Lu Xingchi and the others had found a person selling boat rides by a dock. The boat owner charged sky-high prices to ferry people across the river.
In the novel, Lu Xingchi had left the Jiangcheng supermarket right away and headed to the riverside, where they happened to meet the boat owner. But now, since they had "shopped" in the warehouse, encountered Zhou Cang killing people, and stayed the night, they were a full day behind the novel's timeline.
Since they were a day late, Bei Nuan didn't know if they could find that boat.
There was a dock not far from them, but there wasn't even a single boat tied there.
Lu Xingchi pulled the jeep to the side.
Du Ruo poked him and whispered something.
Lu Xingchi turned and asked Jiang Fei, "Do you need to go?"
Jiang Fei looked much better. He sat up and said, "Yes. I drank too much water in the morning."
There weren't any bathrooms here. They were going to settle the bathroom issue in the wild grass by the dock.
Bei Nuan didn't want to go. Lu Xingchi handed the jeep's key to her. "Lock the jeep. Don't open the doors to anyone."
It felt like he was a mother rabbit instructing a baby rabbit before leaving their home.
Bei Nuan obediently nodded. "Got it. I won't open the door to anyone until Mom comes back."
Lu Xingchi slightly smiled and got out of the jeep with his crossbow.
The rain had stopped. They walked quite far into the grass, and their figures gradually disappeared into the tall, wet grass. They were probably worried that Bei Nuan would see them if they were too close.
Bored, Bei Nuan looked around and suddenly noticed that something on the water was coming towards this side.
As it got closer, she saw that it was a boat. The boat wasn't big. It had a square metal canopy to shield the sun, there was a flag on the roof, and there was a motor on the back of the boat. It looked exactly like the black boat mentioned in the novel, but the boat didn't stop when it passed the dock.
Bei Nuan quickly put down the car window and shouted over at the wild grass, "Lu Xingchi, there's a boat! A boat is coming!"
There wasn't any movement in the grass.
Bei Nuan poked out her head again and desperately shouted at the boat that was getting farther away from the dock. "Hey! Wait a second! Wait for us!"
The boat was too far away. The people on the boat probably didn't hear her. The boat turned a corner and was about to pilot away.
Bei Nuan had no other options. She opened the door and jumped out.
