Chapter 9: I do!
══════════════════
He Chengyang walked ahead and Xu Zhun followed behind him.
The two men reached He Chengyang’s office in the He Group headquarters and entered one after the other.
Sitting awkwardly in the opulent office, Xu Zhun’s whole body stiffened as he didn’t even know where to place his hands and feet.
He was only an insignificant salesman in his company. The only contact he would have with clients would be at managerial level at utmost. He’d never even dream of talking to the president of any company about a potential contract.
And it was crucial to note that the other party was still He Chengyang.
Although the two were close, this was the first time they had sat down together in a formal setup like this.
With sweating hands, Xu Zhun straightened his spine and remained stiffly silent.
At the same time, the receptionist brought over a cup of coffee and gently placed it in Xu Zhun’s hand, while smiling, “Please enjoy your coffee, sir.”
Xu Zhun smiled politely before saying “thank you”.
Although He Chengyang looked at him with a straight face, he was secretly amused. He sat casually on his armchair; his long legs folded together. “Why are you being so nervous? Is this how you conduct yourself with clients? No wonder your performance is so poor. Who would want to make a deal with you in these circumstances?”
Shame coursed through Xu Zhun as he hung his head down.
“By the way, what does your company even do?”
He Chengyang knew practically nothing about Xu Zhun, only that he was a salesman and even more so, he still had no idea what kind of products he sold.
“Our company does advertisement and promotion. Mr. He, let me tell you a bit more about ……”
Xu Zhun took out the company prospectus and its performance records and placed them on the table.
He Chengyang leaned back in his chair and looked at him with amusement, “I’m not really interested in hearing that right now.”
Xu Zhun’s expression stalled and he looked at him expectantly, “Then when do you want to hear about it?”
“At your house tonight, after you undress and sit on top of me, you can tell me all about it.”
He Chengyang’s expression was nonchalant, but Xu Zhun surely was not as composed as he was.
His face instantly turned red and he stammered, “I …… This …… I ……”
“No?” He Chengyang’s eyebrows rose and his eyes darkened, “If you don’t want to, forget it! Get out now, I don’t have that much time to waste on you.”
“I do!” Xu Zhun quickly interjected, “Mr. He, I’m willing. I’m okay with whatever you say.”
He Chengyang chuckled darkly, “You’re really willing to do anything for a contract.”
Xu Zhun initially moved his lips, but ultimately did not argue.
It wasn’t even about the contract! He didn’t want to make He Chengyang mad.
A contract is just a piece of paper, how can it even be compared to He Chengyang.
“Wash up and wait for me at home tonight.” He Chengyang was still grouchy about the egg noodles he didn’t get to eat last night: “Right, I want egg noodles tonight, and you can cook a few more dishes as well.”
He Chengyang mentioned a few dishes and Xu Zhun scrambled to jot them down.
It was only when he came out of He Group’s building that Xu Zhun remembered that he had no money left.
After paying for his emergency treatment yesterday, he only had about 200 yuan left in his wallet. There were still ten days to go before he was paid, and as the company provided lunches, he always cooked noodles in plain water in the evenings so that he could survive with that sum of money until payday.
However, He Chengyang was coming over for dinner and the dishes he wanted were quite expensive. He had no idea if the money he had was enough to cover the expense.
Xu Zhun nonetheless returned to the company to reorganize his achievements and make new plans concerning the latest products to be developed by the He Group.
He relayed his idea to the manager, who immediately sprang into action.
He said he would be given an increased share of the commission if he could secure a contract with He Group.
After Xu Zhun got the materials together, he went to the supermarket at the end of the day.
The supermarket had all the green vegetables on sale in the evenings and the prawns and chicken wings were also cheaper than if they had just been re-stocked in the morning.
The meal still used up all of his two hundred yuan. Yet Xu Zhun didn’t feel any distress because of it. As long as he could feed He Chengyang properly, he was willing to spend any amount of money.
After going back home and preparing the four dishes alongside the soup, Xu Zhun took out the only bottle of wine he had in the house.
It was a red wine that his father had kept during his lifetime, and he never even bothered to drink it normally. It was definitely not as good as what He Chengyang was used to, but it was the best his family could get.
After getting dinner ready, Xu Zhun took out He Chengyang’s slippers from the shoe cupboard and arranged them neatly on the floor mat.
