“Er…” Martha waved her hand in front of the doctor’s face when he didn’t speak for quite a while. “Doctor?”

The doctor instantly took a deep breath in and nervously said, “Umm… Passing out after witnessing a decapitation is a normal response for us humans. Her Majesty should regain consciousness on her own. It might take a few minutes to a few hours. But there’s no need to worry.”

He cleared his throat and added, “I can’t guarantee Her Majesty not having an emotional trauma when she wakes up though, especially if she witnessed the decapitation of someone who was dear to her.”

Martha’s face turned all red because of shame even though it wasn’t her who had tried to attack the Queen earlier. “Um… Her Majesty didn’t even know who she was,” she mumbled.

The doctor nodded his head and began packing his suitcase. And while doing so, he gave a suggestion to Martha, “I don’t know how Her Majesty was brought up by her parents, but I would like to believe that they kept her away from witnessing such gruesome scenes. If you don’t want Her Majesty to go into another shock again, it is better that she is kept away from such scenes.”

Martha gave a low bow and replied, “I will deliver the message to the others. Thank you for coming here and checking up on our Queen.”

The doctor gave an awkward smile and headed out of the bedchamber. He wanted to leave the castle that was crawling with vampires as soon as he could.

Vincent was standing by the main door of the Queen’s chambers. When he saw the doctor coming his way, he asked, “Shall I ask someone to drop you back at your clinic?”

The doctor swiftly shook his head and replied, “I would like to see myself out, Milord. But I would be grateful if… I could wait for the other doctor who you brought here along with me.” It was clear that the doctor was afraid to walk down the path through the woods alone.

.....

Vincent gave a nod and then said, “Follow me. I will take you to the other patient’s room.”

The doctor quietly walked behind Vincent while tightly clutching his suitcase handle. He almost got startled when Vincent asked a question to him.

“I never asked your name.”

“Umm… My name is Matthew Trowell,” the doctor replied somewhat reluctantly. And he hoped that the vampire lord would stop trying to have small talk with him. He simply wanted to walk in silence.

However, Vincent wasn’t simply trying to have small talk with Matthew. Since humans were prone to several illnesses and injuries, he thought that it was about time they hired a residential doctor.

Caspian had talked about this in the past as well, but since he had other issues that required his attention, he had forgotten about it.

And as the doctor was already here, Vincent thought of talking with him on behalf of the King.

“Mr. Matthew, His Majesty was thinking about hiring a proficient doctor to look after the Queen’s health. It is an inconvenience for us to go and fetch a doctor all the way from Silver Keep, especially in emergency situations.”

Matthew already had some idea as to what the vampire lord would propose next.

So, before Vincent could ask, Matthew blurted out, “I don’t think I would be the suitable candidate for such an important task, Milord. I don’t have much experience in this field. I think it would be better if you proposed this to someone with more experience than me. The Queen would be in better hands.”

Vincent smiled to himself when he met the rejection. This wasn’t the first time he had been rejected by a doctor tonight.

However, he wasn’t willing to give up yet. “There could be other doctors out there. But since you already examined the Queen once, won’t it be better if you continued doing so?”

He looked over his shoulder to see the doctor panicking. And he said after sighing, “We vampires might not have a good reputation among the humans. But I assure you that you will be safe here. No one will ever lay a hand on you.”

Matthew seriously doubted that. And he made yet another excuse, “I have been dedicating considerable hours of my time to researching the cure for some diseases. And all of my work is in my lab. I would like to keep on working on them.”

“I can ask a few men to move your lab here. You will be provided with a spacious room to work in. And you don’t have to worry about money. The King will pay you generously,” Vincent said with finality as if he had already decided to hire the doctor.

Though Matthew didn’t immediately agree with Vincent’s request, it looked like he was giving the proposal a thought.

For now, Vincent was satisfied with that.

Soon, they both reached outside Tilla’s room. After announcing his presence, Vincent opened the door and looked inside.

He saw Tilla laying on her side with her leg resting on a pillow. It looked like she had fallen asleep. He then asked the doctor who was treating Tilla, “How are things going on here? Is she okay?”

The doctor was teaching something to Holly when Vincent arrived in the room.

He looked at Vincent and answered, “She sprained her back after that bad landing. Thankfully, she doesn’t have any fractures. Applying cold pressure and resting in a fetal position will help her to recover faster. And after a few days, she can take slow walks for about 30 minutes each day. If she follows the routine and takes her pain medications, she should completely recover within a month.”

“A month?” Vincent raised his brows and exclaimed. “Does that mean she can’t work during that time?” he asked.

The doctor gave a nod and replied, “It’s better if she doesn’t do anything that’s labor-intensive until she recovers fully. If she doesn’t rest properly now, she might have difficulty in her old age.”

Vincent felt his heart shrink when he heard that. He looked at the serene face of Tilla and whispered, “Old age… huh…”

He instantly shifted his gaze to the doctor and asked, “So, are you done treating her?”

“Yes.” He pointed at Holly and said, “I was teaching her how to give cold pressure to the patient’s back. She should be able to sit properly in a day or two if it’s done properly.”

Vincent took a deep breath in and tried to come to terms with the fact that Tilla would need plenty of rest before she was healed completely.

While he was still sucked in his thought, he put his hand in his pocket and then handed a handful of gold coins to both doctors. “Thank you for your services. I will let the King know how you helped them. He will be grateful towards both of you.”

The doctors were ready to be on their way when Vincent suddenly offered, “How about I send a carriage to drop both of you to your respective clinics or homes, wherever you prefer? The path through the woods might not be safe for you two to walk at night.”

Although Matthew initially wanted to deny the offer, he knew better than to deny it for his own good. So, he bowed and agreed.

And before they left, Vincent reminded Matthew once again, “I hope you will reconsider what I proposed to you earlier. If you have any other demands, you can openly put them forth when someone from the castle gives you a visit again.”
