Chapter 68: Panic Attack
Just as Lin Xin finished collecting the table, Lin Xinyu woke up. He stood at the door with eyes still fogged with sleep and saw Lin Xin busying about, brimming with energy. His mood also became better. Lin Xinyu smiled as he ran over and grabbed Lin Xin’s hand.
“Little Yuan, Little Yuan, come over here.” Aunt Hui waved at him.
Lin Xinyu hesitated for a moment, then released Lin Xin’s hand and walked to Aunt Hui’s side.
Aunt Hui pulled Lin Xinyu and looked at him again and again, repeating what she said the day before, “Does it still hurt?”
Lin Xinyu shook his head.
Aunt Hui asked again, “Is it really not painful? It really doesn’t hurt anymore?”
Lin Xinyu looked at Lin Xin and asked her what to do with his eyes.
Lin Xin smiled at him, ‘tell her everything’s fine’.
Lin Xinyu lowered his head and held Aunt Hui’s hand. He lightly patted her hand, saying, “Mom, I’m fine.” The voice which called out to its mother was extremely pleasing to the ears.
Hearing that, Aunt Hui was elated, “Sigh, it’s good that you’re fine, it’s good that you’re fine. Come, come, let’s have breakfast. Seeing that you’ve become so weak, you have to eat more.”
Lin Xin brought out two sandwiches and placed them in front of Lin Xinyu. She patted his shoulder, “You need to finish up these two. From tomorrow on, we’ll get up early and go for a run.”
Lin Xinyu looked at the two massive, blocky sandwiches and bit his lips, not wanting to eat. He looked up, pleading, “Can I just have one?” His appearance was reminiscent of a proud little kitten.
Lin Xin remained unmoved and said with a straight face, “You have to eat it all.”
Even Aunt Hui stood on Lin Xin’s side, “Little Yuan, you’re so thin, eat it all up while your body is growing. After you finish eating, your mother will buy you the books you like.”
Lin Xinyu picked up a sandwich and, bringing it to his mouth, took a bite of it.
What’s this weird smell? Why does it taste so much like duck dung? There must be something wrong. He turned his head to ask Lin Xin what was in it.
Lin Xin cheerfully asked, “Isn’t it great? I made it.” In fact, she loved cooking. Once, seized by a sudden inspiration, she made several dishes in accordance with a cookbook. After that, her parents never let her cook again. They said that if a girl cooked, her hands would get rough, so she should just study properly. Her parents were afraid that she would injure herself, so they wouldn’t let her cook. Was there anyone who loved her more than they did? Of course she couldn’t let them down. Hence, she never stepped foot into the kitchen again. This time though, she decided to make two sandwiches out of Lin Xinyu’s fried eggs for him whilst Chen Qingrong washed the dishes.
Lin Xinyu swallowed the sandwich in his mouth and said with a smile, “Delicious, very delicious.” Then he quickly finished the two sandwiches and gulped down a glass of milk.
“If it’s good, I’ll make it for you hereafter. I want to raise you to be fair and plump.”
Lin Xinyu really wanted to cry. Still, he resisted the urge to do so, forced a smile and said, “Alright.”
At this time, Cheng Qingrong came out of the kitchen after washing up. Seeing his wife and the two children getting along with each other, and Lin Xin acting so much like a normal child, the burden in his heart was not that heavy anymore. He wiped his hands on his apron, “Xiao Fang will be dropping by soon. The two of you, come with me to the hospital. I’ve already arranged everything there.”
Hearing that they were going to the hospital, Lin Xin urged Lin Xinyu to quickly change clothes, “Go wash your face, I’ll go get some clothes for you, hurry up.”
Lin Xinyu washed his face and returned to his room. Lin Xin had prepared him his clothes. A simple white shirt and pair of slacks were spread across his bed. Lin Xinyu saw the white shirt on the bed and clenched his hands into fists. He slowly walked to the bedside.
Lin Xin said, “You will definitely look good in a white shirt. When we return from the hospital, I’ll take you to the hairdresser for a cut. I’m sure you’ll fascinate a lot of girls at school.”
Lin Xinyu heard the happiness in Lin Xin’s voice and bit his lips without saying a word.
Cheng Qingrong’s voice came from outside the door, “Hurry up, there will be heavy traffic in a while.”
City S’s traffic jam record could be said to be the largest in the world. In her previous life, Lin Xin had experienced it before.
Seeing that Lin Xinyu wasn’t moving, she hastily took off the pajamas on his body and said, “Aiya, hurry up. We have a lot of things to do today.”
Lin Xinyu stood there as still as a statue, neither crying nor smiling. The linen nightshirt hung over his shoulder. Spasming, Lin Xinyu wrapped his arms around his chest and looked at the white shirt held by Lin Xin in horror.
Lin Xin suddenly understood. Previously, the principal loved to wear white shirts. She immediately threw away the shirt in her hands and hugged the shivering Lin Xinyu.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here now. No one can hurt you anymore. Don’t be afraid, I’m sorry, it’s my fault.”
Lin Xinyu clenched his teeth tightly. His eyes were wide open as he rolled on the ground in pain. His chest hurt so much that he couldn’t breathe.
He didn’t want to die. He still wanted to grow up with Lin Xin. She said she would take him to a lot of places he hadn’t been to, eat things he hadn’t eaten, do a lot of things he hadn’t done. But there was something pestering him, and he couldn’t break free.
He didn’t want to do that. He really didn’t want to.
“Xiaoyu!” Suddenly, a clear voice sounded from the horizon. Breaking through the shackles of this battle was no longer as painful as it was previously. He slowly opened his eyes, feeling a sweet taste encompass his mouth. The appearance of the person in front of him gradually cleared. A small face, a small nose, a small mouth.
She ran her hand through his hair. “It’s all right,” she said, her eyebrows curving.
The new bite marks covering her arm were prominently visible to the eye.
