Morton stared at Halia's face in detail as she laughed and suddenly felt his heart race. He had just met this woman for the first time and he didn't even know her name, but she felt so familiar.
"Have we met before?" he asked with slight confusion on his face.
Halia quickly stopped laughing and looked away, "No...we've never met before."
Morton scanned his eyes up and down the woman. He was certain that he had seen her before, but he couldn't quite pinpoint it at that moment. After all, the apartment was dimly lit, so he couldn't see her properly.
Halia cleared her throat awkwardly as the man continued to stare at her. "Let's go to the other room," she reminded as she started to lead the way.
"Oh, yes!" Morton immediately snapped out of his daze.
He then went to unlock the door of the other bedroom.
As soon as they stepped inside, Morton closed the door and Halia went to switch on the lights.
When Halia saw the room for the first time, her eyes immediately lit up. She had a good feeling about this.
This was the main bedroom and it was much bigger than the other room. The other room was only big enough for one king-size bed and there was nothing else inside, but this room had a bed, a dresser, and even a walk-in wardrobe.
So, she turned to Morton and said, "You don't have to wait for me. After I'm done here, I'll leave and lock the door behind me."
Morton shook his head, "It's no trouble at all. I can't leave you alone. What if you need help with something? I'll be honest with you, I'm Roy's boss and I know where everything is in this apartment. If you need anything, just let me know and I can help you. I'll be right here."
Morton lay down on the bed and looked at the ceiling, "Besides, it's nice to get some peace and quiet."
Halia looked at the man helplessly. She couldn't pull him off the bed and kick him out forcefully, so she walked into the bathroom to think of a plan. She simply needed a little bit of time to search the room. What could she do to distract him for a bit?
Halia paced back and forth inside the bathroom as she tried to think of a plan.
Should she just take really long and wait until the man fell asleep? He did look tired.
Halia made a little gap in the bathroom door and peeked at the man. He was still lying on the bed, but his eyes were wide open.
No, that wouldn't work. The man didn't look like he was falling asleep any time soon.
In that case, should she just walk up to him and knock him out like what she did to Marissa?
But then again, after what happened with Marissa last time and all the complications that followed, it didn't seem like such a good idea.
At that moment, Halia's eyes fell upon a cup sitting on the sink and an idea came to mind. It was a glass cup!
As Morton lay in bed staring at the ceiling, he was suddenly startled by the sound of smashing glass coming from the bathroom.
He immediately sat up and ran over to the door, "Miss, are you OK?"
The door gently opened and Halia stepped out with her hand wrapped in a towel. "I accidentally knocked over a glass cup and cut myself."
Morton's eyes opened wide with concern. "Let me have a look," he said as he grabbed her arm.
But, Halia quickly pulled her arm back. "I'm OK, it's not that deep of a cut. Can you go get me some bandaids and a broom to sweep up the glass?"
The man said he knew where everything was, didn't he?
Morton quickly nodded his head and walked towards the door, "I'll be right back." He then rushed outside.
As soon as the door shut, Halia threw the towel aside and praised herself for thinking of such a great idea. Her hand was perfectly fine. With a slight smirk, she quickly started searching through the room.
First of all, she ran straight into the walk-in wardrobe and started digging through every nook and cranny for something suspicious. Unfortunately, apart from clothes and accessories, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
She then scurried over to the bedside drawers and opened the one on the right. The top two drawers were filled with bank statements. So, Halia quickly pulled them out to have a look.
To her surprise, none of the statements were for Roy. They were all for his clients. Why were they in the bedroom and not in the study room?
Apart from statements, there were even welcome letters and invitations to increase credit limits, and they were all addressed to the law firm. Initially, this wasn't too strange because some people liked to have their lawyers look over everything legal, but a wallet that sat beside the letters was what caught Halia's eyes. Inside the wallet were various credit cards...and the credit cards all had different names on it. Amongst these names, was Donald Qian.
Halia quickly realized something: this was how Roy embezzled money. He didn't just overbill and type up fake receipts, it seemed he was also involved in identity theft and had used his client's details to get credit cards! If things were purchased on authorized credit cards, then they wouldn't seem suspicious. And if the client died soon after, there would be no one to prove that the transactions were fake. After that, he could just pay the bills using the trust funds that he was guarding...
Halia quickly threw a few of the statements and credit cards into her handbag and flipped over to the bedside table on the left to see if there was anything else.
But, just as she opened the top drawer and pulled out a box sitting on top, the door opened and Morton returned.
Halia held onto the box and quickly turned around in surprise.
"What are you doing?" Morton asked with suspicion. Why did this woman look like she was stealing something?
"I-I-I..." Halia stuttered, "I'm looking for bandaids!"
Morton walked over and grabbed the box out of Halia's hands and noticed they weren't bandaids. Halia gasped and looked up at the man as she realized what the box she had found was.
It was a box of condoms!
Morton looked at the box and smirked, "What's this?"
Halia shook her head, "I didn't know that that was there. I was honestly looking for bandaids."
Morton glanced at Halia's hand and raised an eyebrow, "But, you don't look injured."
He noticed at that moment that her finger wasn't bleeding.
"I stopped the bleeding already," Halia lied as she grabbed the towel on the bed and quickly wrapped her finger again.
Morton looked at the woman with doubt. But, now that she was standing under the bright lights of the bedroom and he was looking down at her, he suddenly realized why she looked so familiar. He put down the box and hooked his hand under the woman's chin so he could look at her properly. "Mars?" he asked.
Halia quickly shook her head away from his hand and replied, "My name is Haili Feng, Director of Fengtai Corporation. I think you've mistaken me for someone else."
Morton opened his eyes wide in surprise and backed away, "Haili Feng?"
He had heard this name before. Everyone knew about the mysterious heiress of Fengtai Corporation. She wasn't someone he could afford to offend.
But, then again, no one had seen her before and he was sure the woman in front of him was Mars Wu. Was this woman lying?
