After their quick stopover in Beijing, Halia and Jackson flew back to Guiyang City early the next morning. By the time they arrived at Father Feng's place, Coco was already there and he was running around the back garden, exploring his new temporary home.
As soon as Father Feng saw the couple, he ran over to them with a relieved expression. "You're finally back! Hurry and deal with the monster, I don't know what to do!" he exclaimed. The monster he was referring to was obviously Coco.
Coco had arrived two days ago, but since he arrived, Father Feng had not stepped foot into his back garden due to fear. In fact, he was so scared of the dog that he had to feed it by throwing food over the balcony.
Halia laughed and walked outside with Jackson.
As soon as Coco saw his owner, he ran up to Halia and jumped into her arms.
Ever since she joined the police force, Halia had been taking one case after another and traveling all over the place. As a result, she had spent a lot less time with Coco than she wanted, so she was happy to finally have some time with her little companion.
Whenever she wasn't around, Cleo and Max took care of Coco. In a way, Coco was their matchmaker, so they treated him like their own. Thus, while Halia and Jackson were away on their honeymoon, Cleo and Max took Coco to a d.o.g.g.y day spa and gave him a professional haircut.
As he buried himself in Halia's arms, the little brown poodle looked like a teddy bear. Halia couldn't understand how her father could be afraid of something like this, but he was clearly terrified as he watched them from behind the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He opened a little gap in the door and yelled out, "I made an appointment with a realtor for you. He can take you to inspect a few properties this afternoon. You can see if anything suits your tastes."
Halia looked at Coco and laughed. "I've never felt this unwelcome before. It's all because of you," she joked. Of course, she didn't really blame the dog. In fact, she was thankful that the dog gave her an excuse to live in her own place with Jackson.
The little dog looked up at her with his round eyes and stuck out his tongue as he puffed excitedly. He had no idea what Halia was saying, but the sound of his owner's voice made him happy.
Halia kissed the little dog on the head.
That afternoon, Father Feng's realtor friend met with the couple and took them around to some of the best properties on the market. Father Feng was a famous billionaire and so was Jackson, so the realtor assumed they wanted the best. The first house was huge with 10 bedrooms, a 10-car garage, a pool, and even a tennis court, but the couple quickly turned it down. It was just the two of them and the dog, why did they need such a big place?
He then took them to a modern, high-tech house, that was run on smart devices.
As soon as they walked through the door, a voice said, "Welcome home." The curtains then opened, the air-conditioner turned on, and some music started playing.
This house was a lot smaller than the first one, but because of all the technology, the price was similar.
The realtor looked at the couple proudly as he pulled out his phone and said, "Everything in this house can be controlled on your phone, even the rice cooker can be turned on before you get home."
Jackson and Halia looked young so the realtor assumed they would be impressed by the technology. But, Jackson and Halia had worked with much more advanced technology than this, so it didn't phase them. Just the wire connected to Halia's head, for example, was decades ahead of anything found in that house.
At his wit's end, the realtor looked at the couple and asked, "You seem to have a good idea of what you want. Why don't you describe what you're after and I'll see if I have anything suitable." These two did not seem like the typical billionaires, so he didn't want to waste any more time.
Jackson wrapped an arm around his wife and said, "I want a small, quiet, and cozy place. I want to be able to find my wife easily and hug her whenever I want."
He had lived in a big mansion in the past, but it felt cold and distant. There were times when he would go days without seeing his family even though they lived under the same roof because the property was so big. He didn't want to experience that with Halia.
His ideal place was something like his safe house in France. "I want to be able to smell breakfast cooking from the bedroom, I want to hear my wife's footsteps as she walks around the house, I want to look out the window and see her playing with the dog in the garden. I want a small vineyard so I can make my own wine and I want a deck where we can sit back and enjoy it."
Halia smiled and added, "I want a big kitchen so I can prepare good food for my husband, I want a comfortable bathtub so we can relax after a days work, I want a fireplace so we can huddle up in winter, and I want big windows so we can see the flowers bloom in summer."
Jackson looked at his wife and felt his heart warm up. Everything that Halia wanted was what he wanted too.
Unfortunately, something like that didn't quite exist in Guiyang City unless they built it themselves. However, the realtor did find something that was close.
As they opened the door to the two-story home, Halia and Jackson walked inside and had a look. It was a bit bigger than they wanted and there was no fireplace nor vineyard, but there were floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto a big enclosed garden.
Hand-in-hand, Halia and Jackson stepped into the garden and paused. Right in the middle of the garden was a big plum blossom tree. It was currently in full bloom and it looked spectacular as the sun's rays danced across the leaves and petals. Halia looked at Jackson and smiled.
Back when they were kids and Jackson saved Halia from the pool, they had shared their first indirect kiss under a similar tree.
Although the house wasn't perfect, this tree made them feel like they were home...
With a nod, they both looked at the realtor and said, "We'll take it."
However, deep down, Jackson promised himself that he would build Halia's dream home for her someday.
