233 Interrogation
“Last night…” Dong Chang rolled his eyes and put on a thoughtful expression. Then, he smiled knowingly and said, “Last night, I read a book and listened to music alone at home. No one can vouch for me.”
Shen Yin nodded, not surprised by his answer.
She flipped open the folder and placed one of the photos in front of him. “Do you know her?” she asked.
Dong Chang narrowed his eyes and looked at her for a while before saying in realization, “Not really. This is my colleague’s girlfriend. I happened to meet her yesterday. Why? Why are you asking me this question? You should ask my colleague about this girl, right?”
Shen Yin changed the topic and suddenly asked, “You just said that I look like a girl you just met. Who is it?”
“Miss Police, it was just a casual remark.” Dong Chang smiled gently. His eyes sparkled as he stared at Shen Yin, as if he was admiring a precious piece of porcelain.
Shen Yin smiled and said calmly, “In other words, do you think that girl looks like the girl in the photo?”
Dong Chang’s pupils constricted slightly. After a moment, he regained his composure and shook his head. “No. The girl I know is more beautiful, but I think you’re still the most beautiful.”
Shen Yin curled her lips into a cold smile and gestured for him to look at the photo. “The girl in front of you was killed on campus last night, and we now suspect that the murderer is your father, Dong Heng.”
This time, Dong Chang reacted in fury. He slammed the table. He was so shocked that his previously gentle facade completely shattered.
His clear voice was tinged with anger. “It’s that bastard again! How could he do such a thing!”
“Mr. Dong, how’s your relationship with your father?” Shen Yin ignored his outburst and raised her eyebrows as she continued to ask her own questions.
Dong Chang gave a long sigh and forced down the anger in his heart. He said coldly, “Not good. I hate him very much. He broke the law in the past and made me a laughing stock. If not for my mother, I’m afraid I would have given up on life long ago.”
Shen Yin nodded slightly, expressing her understanding. “We’ve already learned about your childhood and know that your mother divorced your father. We deeply regret the past, but we need you to provide us with clues. Do you know where your father is now?”
Dong Chang frowned and slowly shook his head. “Our hometown is in the countryside in Chengxi. I haven’t seen him much since their divorce. I’ve only seen him once since my mother and I moved to the city. I don’t know where he went after that.”
“Was he the one who came looking for you?” Shen Yin carefully memorized everything Dong Chang had said.
Dong Chang nodded. “That’s right. I don’t know how he found us either. My mother was too soft-hearted and allowed him to come in. I didn’t expect him to ask my mother for money as soon as he entered. He said that he was so poor that he couldn’t afford to eat and even hit my mother. Fortunately, I was on leave at that time. I was in the bedroom when I heard the commotion in the living room and rushed out to chase him away. I haven’t seen him since.”
He suddenly looked up at Shen Yin with a burning gaze and said guiltily, “I’m sorry. I don’t know why he did such a dreadful thing. I can’t provide you with any more clues. I’m really sorry, but if you need my help, feel free to look for me at my company. I’ll definitely do my best to help.”
“You’ve already been a big help.” Shen Yin put down her pen and looked up at the surprised Dong Chang seriously. “If it weren’t for you, we probably wouldn’t have been able to identify your father so soon.”
“Miss Police, what do you mean?” Dong Chang frowned in confusion. He adjusted the knot of his tie and shook his head helplessly with a bitter smile. “I really don’t know how you found me, but I’m extremely honored to be able to help the police solve the case as soon as possible. Although it’s likely that my father is the murderer, I will definitely strongly support the police in catching criminals. I can’t let any murderer off.”
Wu Zheng was so angry that he almost laughed. He shook his head slightly and said, “Mr. Dong, we will help you find your father. I believe that the truth will be revealed when the time comes.”
Dong Chang nodded happily and said with a smile, “Yes, I believe so too. Officer, can I leave now?”
Without evidence, the police could only hold the suspect for 24 hours at the most. Although Dong Chang was their primary suspect, the key evidence pointed to his father and had nothing to do with him. According to the rules, they should release him immediately and arrest the real murderer.
However, everything they knew about Dong Chang’s father was based on Dong Chang’s side of the story. Wu Zheng planned to wait for Zou Sheng to confirm the father’s exact address, and bring him back to the police station before he considered whether to release Dong Chang.
He and Shen Yin looked at each other. After confirming that the other party had no other questions, he pretended to be apologetic and smiled at Dong Chang. “I’m sorry, Mr. Dong. I have to ask you to stay here for another day. When we can confirm that you have nothing to do with this case, we will definitely release you immediately.”
