237 Searching for Evidence
Dong Chang’s room was extremely neat. Even the trash in the trash can had been cleared. Nothing was out of place and everything was neatly arranged.
Shen Yin walked into the room and sized up her surroundings out of habit. Then she opened the closet as if by accident. After a quick glance, she closed the closet door and turned to look at Mother Dong, who was standing at the door. “Mr. Dong’s taste is very good. I really like how the bedroom is decorated.”
“Then it seems that you and Little Chang have common interests!” Mother Dong happily walked over to tell Shen Yin about Dong Chang’s habits, but Meng Heng quickly grabbed her arm.
Mother Dong turned around to look at him in confusion. She caught a flash of displeasure in the young man’s eyes.
She was surprised and asked curiously, “Officer, why did you grab my arm?”
“Auntie.” Meng Heng let go and said with a serious expression, “You haven’t answered our questions. Come back to the living room with us.”
“Yes, Auntie.” Zou Sheng eagerly helped her back to the sofa and said with a friendly smile, “Just a few simple questions. You just have to answer them truthfully.”
“Oh, then go ahead and ask.” Mrs. Dong was a little worried, but seeing that her son’s door was open and that her seat was facing the bedroom door so that she could see Shen Yin’s movements, she did not insist on following Shen Yin into the room.
“Thank you, Auntie.” Zou Sheng took out a recording pen and placed it on the coffee table. Then, he used the questions he had formulated on the way here and began to ask Mrs. Dong to answer them one by one.
In the room, Shen Yin deliberately did not close the door so that Mother Dong would lower her guard. However, this made it inconvenient for her to conduct a proper search. She could only look around slowly and carefully observed every blind spot in the room. She did not miss a single spot.
Listening to Mother Dong’s earnest answers in the living room, Shen Yin quietly turned her back and sneakily opened the drawer of the bedside table. She squatted down slightly to look at the things inside.
She had just observed that Mother Dong could not see the bed from where she was sitting. She could not see what she was doing here. As long as she did not make any noise, she would not be discovered.
There were only a few daily necessities in the drawer and nothing special. Shen Yin frowned slightly and walked around the bed to the bedside table on the other side. This drawer was obviously more messy than the other one.
This drawer was filled with miscellaneous items which made it look messy and at odds with the rest of the room.
Shen Yin gave it a cursory glance. It contained a box of dental floss, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, a few band-aids, and a piece of milk candy. She did not find anything special.
Just as she was about to close the drawer, Shen Yin suddenly thought of something Shen Luo had mentioned. Her heart skipped a beat, and she suddenly opened the drawer, picked up the milk candy, and stuffed it into her pocket.
Her sudden movement caused some noise. Mother Dong immediately rushed into the room. When she saw Shen Yin standing in front of the window and looking out, she heaved a sigh of relief and said, “You’ve been looking at this room for so long. Do you want to come out for a cup of hot tea? Or stay and have dinner with Little Chang when he comes back!”
Shen Yin smiled politely and shook her head. “I won’t trouble you, Auntie.”
Her beautiful eyes turned to Zou Sheng, who was standing at the door. She looked past Mother Dong and Shen Yin asked tentatively, “Are you done?”
Zou Sheng immediately got the hint and nodded. “Yes! Let’s go back to the police station quickly. The captain will be waiting for us.”
“Okay.” Shen Yin nodded and walked to the door with an apologetic expression. She looked at Mother Dong and smiled helplessly. “I have some work at the station, so I won’t disturb your rest. We’ll leave first. I’ll come and have tea with you another time.”
“Mm, okay! You must come again another time!” Mother Dong’s finally relaxed. After politely sending them off, she walked back to Dong Chang’s room uneasily and stood where Shen Yin was standing just now to look around. When she did not find anything amiss, she walked out of the room again and even carefully closed the door for her son.
When they returned to the car, Zou Sheng immediately went to Shen Yin’s side impatiently and asked excitedly, “Goddess, tell me quickly. Have you found something?”
Shen Yin lowered her head and took out the candy from her pocket. She showed it to them and said, “I only found this. I have to go back and run a test.”
“Isn’t that just an ordinary piece of milk candy?” Zou Sheng leaned back in his chair in disappointment and said dejectedly, “I’m afraid this trip has been in vain. How can this case be solved?! I’ve had enough!”
“Don’t say that.” Meng Heng gave Zou Sheng a meaningful look and looked at Shen Yin with a comforting smile. “If Sister wasn’t here just now, I’m afraid we wouldn’t even have the chance to enter that room.”
Shen Yin also knew that without running a test on this candy, its discovery was a disappointment. She sighed helplessly and said, “I’ve seen his closet. It’s clean and tidy. There’s nowhere to hide stockings.”
