238 Release
As Meng Heng turned around to drive, he comforted Shen Yin with a smile. “It’s okay. At least we came to take a look, and we did find something. Didn’t you find something suspicious? We’ll just go back and wait for your test results.”
“You’re quite optimistic.” Zou Sheng also sat up when he heard that. Realizing that his attitude just now was wrong, he hurriedly took a closer look at Shen Yin’s expression and pursed his lips guiltily. “Sister Shen, I wasn’t complaining about you. Don’t take it to heart.”
“It’s alright.” Shen Yin smiled slightly and pushed her slight disappointment aside. She perked up again and said, “I trust in my intuition. If I’m really wrong, I’ll treat you guys to a meal.”
“Alright.” Zou Sheng slapped his thigh and immediately promised, “If you’re right, I’ll treat you to a meal as an apology.”
The tense atmosphere in the car vanished with a few jokes.
Zou Sheng relaxed and leaned back against the seat. He stared out of the window blankly. Just his mind drifted, Meng Heng’s phone suddenly rang. However, he was driving and could not answer the call. He took out his cell phone from his pocket and threw it to Zou Sheng in the backseat, asking him to help answer it.
Zou Sheng caught the cell phone curiously. When he turned the screen and saw the words “Captain” on it, he immediately pursed his lips in disappointment. He picked up the phone and said reluctantly, “Captain, this is Zou Sheng. Little Meng is driving so I picked up the call for him.”
As soon as Zou Sheng finished speaking, Wu Zheng’s angry roar came over the receiver. “Where are all of you? Why was Dong Chang released?”
“What?” Zou Sheng sat up in agitation. The hand holding the cell phone turned icy cold. He asked in a panic, “Dong Chang was released? Who released him? Why was he released?”
“That’s what I’m asking you!” Wu Zheng shouted angrily over the phone, “Get back here immediately. I have a score to settle with you!”
Zou Sheng tremebled as he hung up the phone and threw the phone to Meng Heng with a long face. He looked at Shen Yin piteously and said, “Sister, you have to save us later. Otherwise, Captain will definitely dock my bonus!”
“Why was Dong Chang released?” Meng Heng frowned and asked in confusion, “Before we left, we specially instructed our colleagues guarding the interrogation room not to release him.”
“How would I know? Captain was too scary. I hung up on him.” Zou Sheng realized that not only had he made a mistake, but he had also hung up on the Captain. He immediately felt terrible.
When he thought of the detailed explanation that he had given when he had picked up the phone, he wished he could bite his tongue off!
“Don’t worry. Let’s go back and see what the situation is first.” Shen Yin knew in her heart that Lawyer Zhou must be involved. Lawyer Zhou must have either found an alibi for Dong Chang or found some big shot to pressurize the colleagues guarding him. Otherwise, they would not have released him so easily.
Meng Heng knew that the matter was serious. He did not dare to waste any time but drove quickly back to the police station.
The few of them hurried upstairs to Team Three’s office. The moment they entered, they saw Wu Zheng sitting at the head of the table with a dark expression, glaring at them coldly.
Zou Sheng trembled and hid behind Meng Heng. He was so frightened that he wanted to crawl into a hole.
He pushed Meng Heng in front of him and the latter had no choice but to stand up and admit to his mistake. “Captain, we were negligent with Dong Chang. We’re willing to bear the consequences.”
“Consequences? Do you know that he’s our prime suspect now? Do you know the consequences of releasing him?” Wu Zheng slammed the table angrily. He stood up and pointed at Meng Heng’s nose as he scolded, “Where did you go? Why didn’t anyone stay to watch Dong Chang?!”
Shen Yin could not let Meng Heng take the blame alone. She frowned and took the initiative to ask, “Captain Wu, the most important thing now is to find out why Dong Chang was released. Did Lawyer Zhou meddle?”
Hearing Shen Yin speak, Wu Zheng barely suppressed his anger and sat back in his chair. He said in a stern voice, “I don’t know where Lawyer Zhou got a surveillance video of Dong Chang going to the supermarket on the night of the murder. The evidence was conclusive, so the colleague in charge of guarding him could not withstand the pressure and was forced to let him go.”
“What surveillance video? Let me take a look!” This was Zou Sheng’s field of expertise, naturally he was eager to look.
Wu Zheng glared at him fiercely. Then, he took out his phone, pulled up the video, and threw it to Zou Sheng. He said angrily, “Look at it yourself.”
Shen Yin and Meng Heng hurriedly gathered around to look. The surveillance cameras captured a person wearing the same clothes as Dong Chang, making payment at the counter. Unfortunately, he did not look up. However, just by looking at the clothes, they could tell that this person was very likely to be Dong Chang.
“What kind of evidence is this?” Zou Sheng looked at Wu Zheng speechlessly. “Captain, how can this prove that he’s Dong Chang?”
“Doctor Shen, what do you think?” Captain Wu ignored Zou Sheng and pinned his hopes on Shen Yin.
