“Hey, are you sure it’s fine to say something like that?”
“Fine to say what?”
“To speak so assertively like that to my father.”
“I can’t say until I take a look. I need more information though, so tell me, what race are you guys?”
“We’re fenrirs.”
“…I can’t say I wasn’t expecting it, but you guys really are legendary monsters.”
The god-eating wolf, fenrir. Monsters only known in this current age as parts of legends, with claws that penetrate anything and fangs that know no resistance.
I never would have thought that the fenrirs would be thriving as a race in this age.
“You know about our race?”
“Hardly, I’ve only heard from folktales and legends. How do you think humans who can’t even live for 100 years could possibly research your existence?”
“It’s just that you seemed really confident, so I assumed you knew all about us.”
“If I looked confident at any level to you, that’s from my experience as a [Tamer], not because I know about you guys. But tell me more, what symptoms is your grandfather experiencing and since when?”
Everything starts from information.
“Everyone knows the reason…”
It’s known? And yet they can’t cure it?
“What do you mean?”
“It’s simple, it’s all from his MP (magic power) deficiency. And it’s because of me.”
Oh, I see the problem with it now.
Which means the treatment is…
“We’ve arrived.”
Hm, so it’s this wolf.
He definitely does seem aged.
He’s covered in gray hairs all throughout his body, but his eyes are still focused, filled with life and purpose. However his physique is clearly falling behind, skinny to the bone.
I have so much more to say though. Like, why is he, a sickly person, resting on the rough dirt ground? Maybe there’s nothing better.
“Who is it?”
The wolf stood up all wobbly, supported by another gray haired wolf who stood beside him.
“Pleasure to meet you, sir. I was brought here by your granddaughter to cure your illness.”
“This isn’t curable. I’m sure you’re aware of that.”
“No, I can cure it sir. With that being said, if you want to die that much, I won’t treat it. I’m a piece of garbage who’s treated as a quack doctor by many because I tend to be easily swept by my patients’ feelings, after all.”
The one who reacted most to my words was the daughter.
It probably felt as if I said that I won’t treat her grandfather, when I was brought here in the first place to help with precisely that.
“And would you look at that. At the end of the day these words are from a human, of course it’s trying to trick us. My dear daughter, bring this back to where you found it.”
“Please wait, father! This human said if he wants to die. I’m sure he’ll cure grandfather if he says he wants to live!”
It seems that another quarrel has started next to me, but I don’t pay heed to it for it’s not of importance.
So what will you do, old man? YES or NO?
“…Can you really cure it?”
“I can.”
I said with confidence. I’m not as much of a fool as to claim that I can fix things I can’t.
“What do you want? I know you humans are greedy.”
Oh, it’s nice that he gets me.
Of course I have desires, and my greed is bottomless.
“It’s a simple wish. Let me stay here with this pack for a while. Just that.”
“And why’s that?”
“Ecological research. There’s no better opportunity than this to get to observe legendary monsters up close. Of course, I have no intent to present it to others.”
Well, that last part isn’t actually to be considerate towards them but just me being possessive.
“And that’s the absolute truth, yes?”
“Stop being overly concerned about it.”
“Well then, why don’t I ask for your help.”
“Father-in-law!?”
“Grandfather!!”
It’s funny how opposite their reactions are.
Now, let’s get to the treatment, shall we!
“Oh, by the way, are your fangs healthy sir?”
“But of course. Even if the body weakens, the fangs will be alive and well even after death.”
“It’s fine as long as they’re healthy.”
Wait, what does he mean by alive even after death? Maybe it’s just a metaphor of some sort.
Anyway, let’s get to prepping, prepping… I trim the hairs on my left arm with a knife tucked in my pocket. I want to sanitize it, but because there’s no alcohol, I produce some water with simple magic to clean it off.
It’s a pretty primitive way for treatment, but I’m sure these guys won’t care much.
After all this is the wild, and they’re wild wolves.
At any rate, it would be great if the dozens of bystanders weren’t staring at me constantly.
“Well then, I’ll start the procedure, sir.”
“What shall I be doing?”
“It’s super simple, just bite my arm and let my blood spew and flow. Then, just drink it.”
“Just that?”
“Just that.”
“Hah, sounds fishy.”
“Father!”
Well, that sort of reaction is expected.
But you see, father, once I spill blood you’ll see exactly how effective this treatment method is.
“You can bite it anytime now, sir.”
“Understood.”
“Oh, don’t break my bones.”
“I know.”
He bites into my arm.
“Wh, what’s this?!”
Wow that hurts. Seriously.
But you understand now, right? I have an abundance of MP inside of me.
So much so that I can supplement the deficient MP in a legendary monster.
“Wait, explain this! How is it that you have this much MP and yet you’re a [Tamer]?! If we’re talking about just the amount!”
‘It’s more than heroes, yeah. Well, I have my circumstances.”
“Circumstances?”
“Yeah, some special circumstances.”
To say it simply, I have too much MP that my body can’t keep up. If I were to use my full power my body would explode into bits.
“So you have too much MP to the point that you can’t actually use your power?”
“Exactly. In a normal case MP increases with practice and training, but I was born with an absurd amount. What’s more, it continues to increase as I grow older, and I was often sick when I was younger thanks to that.”
MP that can’t be stored in the body is released as heat, so my parents were always worried or taking care of me before.
“That’s why I want to take this opportunity to train my body.”
“Is that why you made it a condition that you will live here? I thought that it was a bit suspicious when you said you wanted to do research, but was this the main reason?”
“Yeah, to be honest. It’s also true that I am interested in you guys though.”
“Shrewd human.”
