Volume 3 - CH 5

On this day, Saint Maria Florence was praying in the church as part of her training.

The Hero were present. Currently, in order to fulfill his role as the hero – he was on an expedition to a region that is threatened by the evil of the Demon King’s country, the Lustgard Empire.

Saint Maria is training in this way for the time of the decisive battle with the Demon King that will soon come.

When that time comes, she will go with the Hero to the Lustgard Empire and together they will defeat the Demon King.

For that purpose — and to become the strength of Hero Raven, who has now become her beloved person, Maria was training hard.

“Raven-sama.”

Unconsciously, Maria calls the Hero’s name. She is embarrassed and her cheeks turn red.

Then she realizes that she can’t concentrate any longer today, and decides to end her prayer practice here.

And so – Maria returns to her room, but after a little while, someone came to her room.

Maria turns her head to look, noticing the knocking sound.

“Who is it?”

“Lady Saint. I have come to tell you something.”

“Well then. Please come in.”

Two priests enter the room with Maria’s permission.

“Lady Saint. I have come to inform you that there has been a change in the person in charge of assisting Lady Saint.”

“How do you do, Lady Saint. From now on, we will be your new assistant.”

“I see. It’s a bit sudden, isn’t it? Did something happen?”

Maria wonders why this was so sudden and asks.

“Yes. Actually, it was discovered that the previous assistant had committed fraud.”

“Fraud, is it? He didn’t seem like the kind of person who would do such a thing ……”

“Appearances can be deceiving.”

Maria is surprised at the unexpected turn of events. The priest continues to give Maria the details of the situation.

“It seems that my predecessor has been involved in some minor fraud for some time. He made full use of falsifying reports and so on, and it seems that he rose to a position where he was appointed as an assistant to the saint. After becoming an assistant …… he was suspected of embezzling a large amount of money by cheating the saint out of her “Personal budget” and the church out of the saint’s “Activity fee”.”

A personal budget is a budget that Maria, the saint, can spend personally — a salary, if you will. The nature of the church does not allow for this type of payment, so salaries are paid in the form of a budget deposited with the individual.

And the activity fee is the cost of Maria’s activities as a Saint.

If these were cheated, the amount would be incalculable.

“…… was that the case? That is very unfortunate.”

Maria turns her face down in sadness, partly because she too was deceived and taken advantage of.

“At present, he is only in the suspect phase, but with all the evidence we have, I am sure he will be brought to justice. –When he is officially confirmed as the perpetrator of the fraud, the personal budget of the saint that was embezzled will be returned.”

“Yes, I understand.”

Maria nodded and that was the end of the conversation.

Since this was the end of their report, the two priests continued to talk as if they were making small talk.

The two priests belonged to a different faction from their predecessors and had not had much contact with the Saint, so they were in a weak position.

They are desperate to take this as an opportunity to be remembered by the saint.

“-My Lady. Please rest assured that we will take sufficient measures to prevent such a thing from happening in the future.”

“Measures?”

“Yes. We will take measures against embezzlement of activity expenses by strictly enforcing the contents of reports. As for the embezzlement of personal budgets, we have notified all offices to be vigilant to ensure that the same method is not used.”

“What kind of method was it?”

Here, for the first time, Maria turns her interest to how her money was snatched.

“Now that I think about it, it’s simple. –He used the pretense that he received a request from the Saint to donate to the citizens, and then transfers the money to an adventurer’s account under a false name that he created himself. “

“…… Eh?”

The method uttered by the priest was familiar to Maria.

After all – Maria herself had actually asked for the donation.

“Everyone thought that the Saint might donate money to an orphanage run by the citizens. And no one bothered to look up the details of the payee’s bank account. Therefore, no one noticed the numerous transfers made to obviously unnatural accounts in the name of the Saint.”

Hearing this story, Maria is confused.

In fact, she herself had donated. To an ordinary citizen, an individual, called Cyclo.

Was she being used in a scam because of the precedent it set? Or–.

An unpleasant imagination flashed through Maria’s mind.

“From now on, when a transfer from the Saint occurs, we will notify all the various offices to handle it after confirming the other party’s identity.”

“–Um, I just have one question.”

Maria asks the most improbable – and unthinkable question.

“Did the donation I had sent get transferred properly?”

That’s right – it is unthinkable that her personal donation to Cyclo could have been embezzled.
