Mom and Dad’s Daily Life (Part 2)
Ji Qingqing’s labor contractions came suddenly, at least a month in advance.
She was rushed to the hospital by Lu Lixing. On the way, she was trembling in pain, clutching her stomach, and breaking out in a cold sweat. Lu Lixing carefully placed her head on his lap, half lying in the back seat of the car.
“Is the child about to be born?” Ji Qingqing looked at her bulging belly with horrified eyes.
“I won’t... give birth in the car, right?”
“No.” Lu Lixing held her hand. He stabilized her emotions and comforted her. “Don’t be afraid, we’ll be at the hospital soon. With me here, you’ll be absolutely fine.”
Under Lu Lixing’s comforting words, Ji Qingqing seemed to have found her pillar to rely on. She gradually calmed down, no longer panicking, only groaning occasionally.
Pretty soon, they arrived at the hospital.
Ji Qingqing, who had gone into labor in advance, was ushered into the delivery room by the hospital nurse as soon as she stepped out of the car.
Before entering the room, Ji Qingqing suddenly grasped the hand of Lu Lixing who was following behind her, enduring the severe pain in her lower body. Her eyes were filled with fear and uncertainty.
Lu Lixing comforted her in a low voice. “We have arrived at the hospital, don’t be afraid. The doctors and nurses are here to help you. You’re in safe hands now. I’ll wait for you outside, okay?”
“Will you... wait for me here?”
“Yes, I’ll wait for you here, waiting for you and the baby to come out safely.” Lu Lixing gave Ji Qingqing a long look. He tenderly stroked her hair, and suddenly leaned over and kissed her on the forehead.
A very light yet solemn kiss swept across her forehead.
Tears started to flow out of her eyes, but she inexplicably became at peace because of his kiss. She was no longer frightened, her emotions seemed to be soothed by his kiss in an instant.
“Mr. Lu.” The doctor reminded him in a low voice.
Lu Lixing gritted his teeth and said nothing. He only nodded his head in silence, then closed his eyes solemnly.
Bit by bit, time passed. While Aunt Pei prayed, the Buddhist beads on Grandpa Lu’s wrist had already turned several times. God seemed to have answered their prayers when finally, after a few hours of waiting, the doors opened.
The doctor was the first to come out of the delivery room. He pulled down his mask and showed a tired smile to them. “Congratulations, Mr. Lu, mother and son are safe.”
Lu Lixing’s stiff body finally made some movement. He lowered his head and grinned in a trance. He then took a few steps forward but staggered. Lu Lixing forgot that he had been standing for so long and that his feet had grown numb.
The nurse came out of the delivery room holding a child and smiled. “Grandpa Lu, it’s a boy! He’s very healthy, weighing five and a half pounds. Congratulations!”
The child closed his eyes and lay quietly in his swaddling clothes. His skin was white and tender, his bright red mouth moved from time to time, spitting bubbles out, and a small hand stretched out, dangling in mid-air, which was very cute.
“Young master, look, this is your son.”
Lu Lixing looked at the infant in the swaddling cloth, hesitating to even touch him.
Such a fragile little life. He looks just like a little porcelain doll.
Grandpa Lu carefully glanced over at the baby. The more he looked at him, the more he liked him. A pair of eyes clung to the child, unable to take his eyes off him.
Aunt Pei smiled and said, “This child has been so white and fat since he was born. He looks so good. In the future, he will definitely be more handsome than his father.”
“Surely he will!”
The nurse holding the child smiled and said, “Mister, the child is going to be sent to the guardianship room, you see...”
“Well,” Grandpa Lu said, “Aunt Pei and I will take care of the children. Lixing, you wait here for me to come out.”
Lu Lixing nodded and continued to wait outside the delivery room while Grandpa Lu and Aunt Pei followed the nurse to the monitoring room.
After one more hour, the nurse pushed Ji Qingqing’s trolley out of the delivery room.
