A few hours later, Helvi and Theo had lunch.
It was the first time in a while that Helvi cooked, and she watched Theo eat it with a smile on her face.
“It’s great! Especially the seasoning of this meat!”
“I see, that is good to hear. I tried to make it match your taste.”
“Ah, so you remember our conversation?”
“Of course.”
“Wow that’s great! Thank you!”
Of course Helvi would remember a conversation about Theo’s tastes. Theo himself also made sure to remember everything that Helvi said was good.
Both wanted to know the preferences of the person they liked.
After finishing their lunch, they put everything away and went back to the carriage.
The black horse also finished eating the dry grass that Helvi floated towards it, and was ready to go.
Not very long after they started moving again, Helvi noticed something.
“Hm… There are people being attacked up ahead.”
“Eh? R-really? By a monster?”
“No, by humans. Probably bandits.”
Theo frowned. They had been attacked by bandits before as well.
Human malice was a very cruel thing, and something Theo was exposed to countless times before he met Helvi.
He really wanted to help whoever was being attacked, but also knew he was not anywhere near strong enough.
“H-Helvi, hum…”
“I know Theo. You want to help, right?”
“…! Y-yes… But I’m not strong enough…”
Helvi started thinking.
For her, the deaths of humans that were not related to her or Theo mattered little, but since she told Theo about it, he would surely be sad if she did not help.
This would make their long-awaited honeymoon get off to a terrible start, which Helvi wanted to avoid at all costs.
“Then let us go help.”
“…! C-can we?”
“Yes, for you. A devil like myself has no reason to care whether humans live or die, but I will help for your sake. Is that alright?”
“Yes, thank you!”
It was human nature to help people not out of pure concern for them, but rather because the rescuer thought they would gain something from it.
Theo remembered his past self, and wanted to help someone being exposed to the same malice he used to be exposed to in the past, and Helvi wanted to help so Theo would not feel bad.
With these thoughts in mind, they went to rescue the people being attacked.
“Then we have to hurry…!”
“No, there is no way this horse will make it in time.”
“Eh? Then how…!?”
“Hang on Theo, I will teleport us.”
Helvi held out her hand, but Theo was so flustered, he hugged her arm instead.
This excited Helvi a little before she teleported the entire carriage.
◇ ◇ ◇
Inessa Nerasova was thinking inside of an overturned carriage.
Pain and injury were not common occurrences in her daily life, but the body she did not train received a strong blow, making her unable to move.
She thought about who might have caused this to happen.
She was a noble, and part of a distinguished family even in the capital.
Since her family rose up in prominence by legitimate ways, many other nobles were jealous.
At first she thought one of those nobles that were always trying to start something with them caused this, but figured even they would not use such cowardly means.
She could see her guards fighting mercenaries hired by some nobles, but she could also tell it was only a matter of time until they lost.
Before the carriage collapsed, she could see that the other side outnumbered them more than two to one.
She tried her hardest to move her body and get out of the carriage.
(If they are after me… They will spare the guards if they kill me…!)
She realized she could no longer hear the guards protecting the carriage, and hoped they were not dead.
She wished for them to realize that they had lost, and to run away.
Inessa managed to get up, but as she tried to exit the carriage, the scenery around her suddenly changed.
She was suddenly outside, and a woman she was sure was not one of the guards stood before her.
Her beautiful long white hair fluttered in the wind.
As she looked around, she saw her wounded guards, and realized that the woman was standing in front of dozens of mercenaries.
It seemed as though the woman stepped forward to fight the mercenaries and protect her and the guards.
Inessa had no idea who this woman was, but thought for sure she would not be able to fight so many mercenaries by herself.
“Run…! You’ll… Lose…!”
“D-don’t get up! Sit down and try to rest…!”
Suddenly, she heard the kind voice of a boy.
The boy ran towards her to support her, but she looked at the woman in front of her.
“Hmph. You are a weak girl, but I do admire your resolve. I only came here because of Theo, but I am glad I did so.”
This woman who seemed to understand Inessa’s resolve looked at her sideways.
Although Inessa could not get a good look at her face, she could tell she was almost too beautiful to be human.
“Wait there Theo, and you too girl. I will take care of them.”
