Caroline went to her room, closed the door behind her, and jumped hurriedly into the bed. She buries her face into the pillow, as the tears began soaking the pillow wet. The tears were rushing out of her eyes the moment she was out of Alex's study room.
Damn that guy!
Why did he have to remind her of the possibility that Mike might no longer accept her and will find solace in another woman's arms? His statement hurts her badly and dampens her spirits.
But he can't blame Alex, he was just stating his opinion.
The possibility of her husband finding another woman while she was away is making her crazy with jealousy. It's something that terrifies her.
What will she do with her life if she loses her husband?
Her life will no longer have any meaning!
She continues crying hoping that after she cries a lot there are no more tears left to cry.
A few minutes later.
She finished crying. She went inside the bathroom and washed her tear stricken face. She dried her face with a clean towel.
Caroline went back to the bed and sat on the edge facing the television.
She recalled her conversation with Greg in the pool area. So far so good, they were back to being acquainted and getting familiar with each other, joking around like they always do in the province, although the intimacy part is already gone at this point, at least they can be civil to each other.
She can easily provide companionship and friendship to Greg minus the romance part.
Greg was her first love, she cried a lot of tears when they got separated. She was left hanging in the dark when he no longer attempted to contact her after the cops destroyed Greg's hideout.
She has several admirers and suitors when she was still working as a saleslady in a department store in Cavite City. She didn't entertain any of them because she was loyal to Greg hoping that one day they will be together again.
Then she becomes entangled with John and develop feelings for him, the only good thing was that her brother-in-law didn't reciprocate her feelings and evil intentions.
Then Joseph comes into her life and almost killed her.
She survived that horrific ordeal.
Next, Mike comes in the picture, her beloved husband. The man she married.
Unfortunately, they also got separated as of this moment, due to the crime she accidentally committed.
Sighing, she was thinking when she will ever have permanent happiness in the arms of a man?
She was just hoping and praying that her husband would not find another woman to take her place. That he would be willing to wait for her return. She left him a letter hoping that it would remind him always to wait for her and not forget their wedding vows.
She stared at her phone wanting to call her sister Catherine or her mother. But it's too early yet for that.
She will wait after this month is over, then she will call Catherine to ask about her husband, her mother, and her younger siblings' condition.
She put her phone back in the bedside table.
What she's going to do now?
Ah, it's still 5:00 in the afternoon.
She was tempted to lie down in the bed and took a nap, but then she remembered that she's here to be Greg's companion. She's the apple of Greg's eyes!
Dang!
She had a job to do!
She combed her hair and tied it in a ponytail, she inspected her face, her swollen eyes are hard to hide but she doesn't care anymore.
She exited the room, went down the stairs, and go back to the pool area to keep Greg company.
While she was walking on the path leading to the pool area, she caught a glimpse of Alex and Greg diving into the pool.
She was hesitating to proceed to the pool, she doesn't want to disturb them on their bonding moment.
She turned around and walked back to the door that will take her inside the house back to the living room.
She passed by in the kitchen and saw the cook busy preparing the dishes for dinner.
She halted on her steps and walked towards the kitchen since she has nothing to do, she might as well offer her assistance to the cook to make her time worthwhile. Besides preparing and cooking dishes is fun and rewarding.
"Hello Amelia, can I help you with preparing the dishes?" Caroline told the middle-aged woman, she gives her a bright smile.
Amelia smiled back at Caroline.
"No need, Ma'am, I can manage alone. But if you want to help me then I don't mind having company here in the kitchen," Amelia replied.
"Alright, tell me what to slice or chop first?" Caroline said holding the knife in her right hand.
"Here..." Amelia put the potatoes and carrots in front of Caroline including the chopping board.
Caroline stared at the knife she was holding in her fingers. She shut off her eyes for a moment, remembering Brenda. Trying to tell herself that it's not the knife she used in stabbing Brenda.
Amelia looked at Caroline with a puzzled expression on her face. "Ma'am, are you okay?"
Caroline breathed deeply and smiled at the cook. "Yes. I just remembered something..." she answered. "What is our menu for dinner?" she asked.
"We will have Chicken Afritada, Creamy Garlic Salmon with Tomato and Spinach, and Spare Ribs Hamonado for dinner," answered Amelia.
Caroline smiled. "Wow! The dishes sound delicious!" She put the potatoes on the chopping board and began cutting them in cubes.
Meanwhile, in the pool area.
The brothers were done swimming and currently relaxing on the lounge chairs.
"How do you feel now that Caroline will be staying with us for a long time, bro?" asked Alex.
Greg smiled broadly. "I'm overjoyed. I can't believe that she's finally living here with us. I mean...I used to think that a once a week visit from her is good enough for me. But now that she's finally here and I can see and talk to her every day...wow bro...it's like I'm dreaming! Please, don't wake me up if this is all just a dream," he said happily.
Alex smiled tapping his brother's shoulder affectionately. "This is real, bro! So, enjoy it! Caroline is here to cheer you up. Amazing, isn't it?"
Greg's eyes were flashing with joy. "Yeah, my life is bearable now and so much better when she's round. It transported me back to our good old days in the province. Although our life is never the same and I can't bring back the past, still I'm seeing her every day. I can talk to her now and hear her laughter and it's more than enough for me," he said with a hint of tenderness in his voice.
He looked at his older brother. "Are you okay with Caroline living here with us, bro?"
Alex nodded his head. "Of course, I'm more than okay with Caroline's presence in our lives. She is the woman you love, therefore she is part of our family. I realized how happy you are that she's here. Whatever that can make you happy I will support you all the way," he told his brother fondly.
"Thank you, bro!" Greg said.
Alex hugged his brother. Too bad, just when they finally found each other, his brother has only a few months left to live.
"Bro, regarding my suggestion to you. Let's go abroad and find you a good doctor there," he mentioned the old topic again.
Greg shook his head. "Nah, no need bro. I just want to spend more time with Caroline than waste my time abroad trying to find the cure. I will remain here where Caroline is. She is my medicine and my cure," he said adamantly.
Alex shrugged his shoulder. "Alright, I will just try to find local medicine here in our country that can prolong your life or cure your illness ultimately," he said.
"It's up to you, bro. I will drink all the medicine that you think is good for my illness. If that makes you happy, I'll do it!" Greg replied with a grin.
Alex smiled, he was amazed at how happy his brother looks right now.
In the past when Caroline was still not around, Greg seldom smiles. Looking at his brother now, he looks totally like a different person.
He was happy for his brother. Having Caroline in the house is indeed a big help to boost his brother's mental and emotional well being. He would rather want a happy looking brother than a sickly dying brother.
Truly, Caroline's presence in his house is indeed a big blessing to his brother which he finds odd at first.
Then out of the blue, his mind wandered to Mike, Caroline's husband.
Whatever their gain right now, is Mike's misfortune.
Dang!
He felt sorry for Mike again.
Maybe because at some point in the past, he also experienced what Mike had undergone, when his wife Nicole suddenly vanished from his life and left him a letter saying that she was in the states going to stay with her sister in Los Angeles. Nicole told him in her letter that she wants to be alone for a while and will come home when she feels she's already okay.
Hurt by what her wife done to her, he no longer bothers going after her in Los Angeles. If she goes away easily not caring about what he feels, so be it, she must learn to come back and apologize to him in person.
Then two years later, his wife demanded a divorce and ask for half of his fortune.
Unfortunately, Nicole will only come home if he agrees to the annulment and his assets will be split in half.
Damn that woman! He curses his wife in his mind.
Two hours later.
Caroline went to the pool area and informed the brothers that dinner is ready.
Mike and Alex went upstairs, took a quick shower in their respective rooms, donned dry clothes on their bodies, and proceed to the dining room area to have dinner with Caroline.
