“Let us discuss the request right away. First, the reward. Tell me what you think of this.”
Floren puts her cup down and slides a piece of paper over to me.
It’s a check with a magic element stamp. She is probably purposefully using a very common parchment with a gold leaf design.
But the amount written there makes me open my eyes wide and let out a voice without thinking.
“This much…”
“Your past record carries that much weight, Master Rust.”
“Do you not think that showing me this sum before telling me the request itself is going to put me on guard, and expect a difficult problem?”
“I don’t see you as the type of person who refuses a request because it is too difficult.”
“No no, you are overestimating me. Even I cannot do everything.”
I don’t touch the check, and wait for a response.
But Floren only smiles, and takes another sip.
Is she going to tell me what the request is about after I accept it?
That’s the conclusion I reach as I look at Floren.
I was taken all the way here, and even though I’m dealing with royalty, there is no one by her side. Whatever it is, it must be highly confidential.
I’m sure Kalin would just tell me to accept it because it sounds interesting. Ahh… If it was just the request I could simply refuse it, but Kalin’s hunches are always right about bad things.
And if it’s related to Zwei, I have no choice.
I reluctantly reach towards the check.
“I knew you would accept it.”
Floren puts down the cup, and grabs a bell on the side of the table.
It’s a magic item. She rings it, but it doesn’t make a sound. Instead, I feel like a wave of magic elements spreads out from the bell.
That’s quite the antique magic item she’s using. That wave of magic elements should be resonating with another bell somewhere else and making it sway. Almost no one uses them ever since communications devices became common.
Someone received that sign, and the door opens.
And it’s Actor Kahelone of the church of Araysla in the capital who steps inside.
