I lost the gamble…
And never in my life had I felt this strange feeling of defeat. I knew Claire would ignore me but never knew reality would hurt that much. Cold sweat fell off my face as she passed me by as if we're back to being strangers.
"I just hope you'd learn to be happy with him,"
Words came out from my mouth by their own.
She didn't respond and walked away.
Deo also left to give me some space.
I stood there frozen as my mind replayed everything I saw.
Why the hell did I have to see everything?
Derick had fucking kissed her…but she'd let him.
She'd let him hug her tight…
She'd let him fool her still…
She was pathetic…
I don't need her…
I don't fucking need her.
"Heartbroken, aren't we?" a female voice.
It was Jessica.
"Why don't you just talk to me?"
She stood at the corner like a rotten wallflower and it disgusted me how she flirtatiously sounded.
Hadn't she learned her lesson?
"Talk to my hand,"
I sneered and went back to the reception area. I didn't know if she followed me back but I didn't care.
Inside, a celebratory talk commenced by the low stage. Governor Brundon has just finished expressing his thanks for all attending guests and had given the mic to his son. Derick energetically went up with a smile as he held Claire's hand.
"Soon there will be another Brundon. A Mrs. Claire Brundon."
The audience oohed and applauded his revelation. Claire was smiling sweetly but her smile couldn't fool me. I knew it was forced.
I bit my lip.
On the corner of the big table, Wenziel and Eriez were unsettled. They knew my affinity with her and at the moment, their only hope has been turning into dust. I wanted to laugh at their helplessness but neither I was glad about the scene.
"So when's the wedding," Eriez asked. Desperate old man.
I smirked.
Knowing him and Wenziel, they just wanted to know if they still got time to interrupt the matrimony. If ever there's really a wedding. For all I knew, Derick could be bluffing.
"We haven't had an exact date yet but it will certainly be next month," he looked at Claire.
I grunted when she smiled back again. It has gotten annoying.
"Cheers," somebody from the guests enthused.
"Cheers," Derick raised his wineglass and tangled arms with Claire as they exchanged drinks like newlyweds.
I brushed by Deo before going outside once more.
"Stay here until you make sure she gets home safe. And I'll take your car."
Strangely enough, I still cared for Claire's safety.
"Yes sir."
He tossed me his car keys and left me without any questions.
My breathing felt heavy as I took my steps away.
Am I just giving her up like this?
