((( KAREN POV's )))
As we ate, I noticed how pale Bhon was. He was just playing with his spoon and seemed to have lost his appetite.
"Are you okay, Bhon?" I pressed the back of my hand against his forehead. He's feverish.
"Oh God, you have a fever."
I immediately called Reymond.
"Yes, I'm driving him to the hospital right now. Just catch up as soon as you can."
I brought our daughter, Sushie, along to the nearest hospital. The checkup and tests weren't as thorough so the doctor recommended we transfer Bhon to another hospital with better facilities. And although I felt a bit shame for having done something against the owner, we brought Bhon to the Zel Cantheliz Hospital.
"Oh God, Reymond…" He arrived a few minutes after Bhon was rushed to the Intensive Care Section and just as the doctor came out to tell us the news.
"Meningococcal B."
My knees weakened upon hearing the diagnosis… The name itself sounded deadly to me.
"It's a bone disease. Malignant bacteria were eating the nutrients of the bone's tissues. And another thing, he collapsed because of red blood cell deficiency in his body. He needed hourly observation and if we can't do something about this as early as possible, it is deadly," the doctor said as calm as he could.
"He'll need blood transfusion and undergo operations."
"Please do anything you can, Doc."
"The operations will take you at least four million pesos." Reymond hid his surprise by saying, "Yes, we understand."
When the doctor left, we stared at each other unpretentiously.
"Where will we get that kind of money?"
"Even if I apply for a loan…we wouldn't reach four million."
"We have savings…"
"That'll help," he sat down on the bench.
"But it'll still talk to my supervisor. Overall, I guess we'll just reach two million."
"…what should we do?" I sat beside him.
"Shhh. I'll try my best to patch up for the remaining amount. Call me if they needed something else." I just nodded.
Reymond tried to be as optimistic but I knew well it's impossible to get another two million easily. I escorted him through the hallway and passed by the Intensive Care Section when I returned.
Bhon was lying unconscious on the hospital bed. His lips were pale and the beeping machines reminded me that his life was on the line.
