When the door to the back of the van was opened a minute later, Little Fan Wushuang hoped that it would be someone who was here to save her.
Unfortunately, she was once again disappointed.
"We're here..." the man said in a hushed tone as he pulled her out of the van.
When he placed her down on the ground, her knees gave in and she fell down. She could barely feel her legs because of her debilitating fear earlier, but the man did not care. He roughly yanked her up and snarled, "What are you trying to play now?"
"I... I'm scared..." she said softly as she looked up at him with a terrified expression and tear-stained cheeks. "Too dark..."
"I don't care! We are finally here, so you better don't mess it up. I'm telling you now. If you try to do something stupid, I'll shoot you right at the spot!" He made her look down at his waist area, where a gun was sheathed.
Little Fan Wushuang nodded.
"Where are the surveillance cameras?" he asked.
"None... This is my toy house."
The man sneered as he looked at the "toy house", which was the size of an actual house. "You rich brats sure have it easy."
He dragged her to the door, but along the way, he kept a keen eye out for any cameras. He did not trust Little Fan Wushuang's words.
When they were at the door, Little Fan Wushuang keyed in the password. They then walked in, and the man was shocked by the number of toys in the house. Toys were strewn everywhere in the house, and the man had to walk carefully to avoid stepping on anything.
The man looked around to make sure that there were no surveillance cameras. He then pushed Little Fan Wushuang in front of him to urge her to walk.
"Why is it so dusty here?" he complained as he waved a hand in front of his face.
"I haven't been here since my parents passed away..." Little Fan Wushuang said in a small voice. She looked at the toys that her parents bought her before, and the memories of her playing with her parents here triggered her sadness.
When the man saw the sad expression on her face, he snarled, "Stop faking it! Bring me to the vault now!"
Little Fan Wushuang nodded. She took him to one of the bedrooms. When they were inside, she closed the door and went to the small bookcase that was located opposite the kid-sized bed. She then touched underneath one of the shelves while frowning. Her frown disappeared when she found the small button that she was looking for.
When she pressed it, the kid-sized bed sprung up slightly, causing the man to jump back a little.
"It's here..." she murmured as she pointed to below the bed.
"Go first!" the man said. However, he was afraid that she might do something, like trigger a trap or something, so he grabbed onto the back of her shirt to prevent her from moving away from him. They were walking into what seemed like a tunnel.
As they walked, he found that there were movement-activated lights that were placed in the tunnel.
Not long after they walked in, he heard a soft thud.
"What's that?"
"The bed," Little Fan Wushuang replied. She looked at the man for a few seconds and seemed to be waiting for his instruction. When he pointed to the front of the tunnel, she continued to walk.
After about another 30 seconds of walking, they entered into a room.
The man's jaw nearly fell onto the ground when he saw the cash lying around in stacks all over the room. The money was placed neatly in the middle of the room, and it was stacked so tall that it almost reached his waist.
On top of the money was a card that said, "Happy 1st birthday, my little princess."
The man threw the card away and placed his face on the money. "Oh my God! This is what a million dollars look like?!"
He was placing some money into his backpack when he remembered the girl. Afraid that she might have run off, he quickly turned around, only to find her picking up the card that he threw on the ground.
She was looking at the card with a teary expression, and he saw her wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes.
He then sighed in relief.
"She said that there's more..." he thought. He had no intention of letting the girl stay alive, so he intended to make her open all the doors to the remaining of the vault before killing her. After that, he could slowly take his time in transporting the money out.
He had sent the "proof" to the woman who hired him, along with a note telling her that if she did not make the payment periodically, he would send everything, including their messages, to the media.
"I want to see the next rooms," he said as he glared at Little Fan Wushuang.
She nodded and went to the door opposite the entrance earlier. Similarly, inside the small room, there were plenty of cash lying in stacks in the middle of it.
"Next one!" he said in an exciting tone. He wanted to get to the next ones as soon as possible. When they were in the third room, he pulled her back to the second room to make sure that the door was opened. "Thank God!" he thought before pushing her back to the third room.
In the fourth room, Xiao Lei had to use a password by singing a nursery rhyme out loud. The man rolled his eyes as she sang. He wondered how big these underground rooms were, collectively. Other than the tunnel they walked down from earlier, there were no other stairs.
The doors were either at the opposite of the entrance, or on the right. It felt like a maze, to be honest.
In the seventh room, she had to use her fingerprints as well as a photo of her eyes. When the man walked in, he was surprised to see that there was no cash on the floor, like in the other rooms. Instead, this was a smaller room than before and there was a pile of gold bars placed in the middle of the room. Above the gold bars was the card "Happy 7th birthday, my dear little princess".
Like usual, he threw the card away.
Just as Little Fan Wushuang was about to walk into the next room, he stopped her.
