Ming Jia froze for a second. She took a moment before asking, "Are you sure the key can unlock the almirah?"
Zhenyi, who was squatting down near the bedpost, stood up with a jerk and wiped her clothes which were now shaded with dust. "Someone had burned down his brain cells for hiding a little key. It can't be for nothing. Let me check if it can open the almirah."
Truly, someone wouldn't go to such an extent for nothing. The key was really a key to something of someone's darkest secrets.
Ming Jia agreed. She just hoped that the key could unlock the almirah. However, she was not ready to unlock Ah-Shaan's deepest and darkest secrets, though she knew of them.
Zhenyi inserted the key inside the lock and stared at the old almirah before twisting the key. She had to agree that the plan Ah-Shaan used was perfect. Or too perfect to be real. No ordinary person would be able to find faults in the switch board if not for the fact that the place where it was situated was a little odd. It wouldn't be normal to someone else but it was to Zhenyi who had seen a number of bizarre things in her life. She found it unsettling as it wasn't every day one would find a switchboard behind the bedpost where a normal person couldn't reach. And she wondered if thirty years ago the technology was so developed.
"I wonder who designed the switchboard. If a person came up with this idea then,I wonder what he would be today. I wish to meet this designer once," Zhenyi pondered out loud.
Ming Jia sighed. "You can't meet him. He died a long time ago."
Zhenyi stopped. "You'd met the genius behind the switchboard?"
"Yes, he was no one else but Ah-Shaan himself. He was a genius, Zhenyi. The mafia life never suited it and when he left--"
"When he left then what?" Zhenyi asked her immediately.
"Nothing." Ming Jia didn't wish to disclose anything.
Zhenyi was exasperated. Just how many mysteries surround the name Long Ah-Shaan?Then again, the people close to Tang Reine couldn't be normal ones.
"Godma, Can you at least tell me what is inside this almirah that you are ready to put my life in danger just to get it?" Zhenyi directly asked Ming Jia.
"Zhenyi! There is nothing I want more than for you to come unscathed," Ming Jia retorted."I trust you more than my son. That's why I asked you for it. I couldn't control my emotions when Brother Xichen told me that you are now staying at the Long mansion."
"What's inside that box?" Zhenyi questioned again. She needed answers.
"Something that could destroy the peaceful lives of many people associated with Reine and Ah-Shaan."
"I don't want to engage in a riddle contest right now."
Why did everyone around her love to talk in riddles?
"Just remember Zhenyi that Ah-Shaan's death was the biggest regret of Reine's life. Until her last breath, she blamed herself for his death. She said it was because of her that he was not with them."
Zhenyi was trying to twist the key inside the lock but it was not moving. When she heard Ming Jia's words, she stopped," How is it mom's fault?"
Ming Jia let out a bitter smile," That's what I told her that time. But she said if she hadn't left him alone that day, he would have been alive. If she didn't leave he would be with them. That's what she used to say."
"She didn't know that something like that would happen," Zhenyi spoke thoughtfully. "Moreover, death is inevitable. We can't stop someone from dying whether we are with them or not."
Zhenyi's body froze when she realized the words she had uttered. She was doing the same thing, wasn't she? Blaming herself for her mother's death?
"You know when Ah-Shaan died, Reine had lost her sanity. She was ready to end the Long family," began Ming Jia, sad smile on her lips.. "She would have... if not for your father. She said he died because of the conspiracies inside the family."
"How close were you and mom with Long Ah-Shaan?" Zhenyi questioned.
"As close as you are to Ryuu."
Zhenyi stared at the old almirah wide-eyed as she processed her words. It meant the three of them were closer than she initially thought. No wonder, Ming Jia knew about the nook and corner of Long Mansion. And not to mention the layout which Tang Reine had with her. It was all because of their relationship with Long Ah-Shaan.
Did Long Shaoming and Elder Long know Tang Reine had them by their balls? If she could get the layout of the entire Long mansion, what she couldn't do?
"Did the key unlock the almirah lock?" Ming Jia questioned, bringing Zhenyi out of her thoughts. She was now getting nervous. She needed that box placed inside the almirah at any cost.
"I'm trying--" Zhenyi swiveled the key inside the lock forcibly in the opposite direction.
And it unlocked…
"It's done!"
"Wow!" Ming Jia stood up abruptly and exclaimed. "Quickly see inside if you find a large wooden box. It's brown in color. It will be quite heavy."
As Ming Jia had said, Zhenyi undoubtedly found the box. She took it out with her hands. It was heavy and so she gently placed it on the bed.
She looked around the room and wondered if it had any hidden cameras. Nonetheless, there was nothing she could do now except for praying that there shouldn't be any cameras installed.
"Let me first clear any evidence that indicates that I have been to this room."
