Chapter 171 - Strawberry Shortcake!

"What should we order?" Rika spoke up to break this awkward and moderately creepy atmosphere that had taken over their table.

Awkward since Yvonne kept glancing at everything else other than Glennise who sat opposite to her and was now rubbing her cheeks while shaking her head as a weird expression sat on her face.

And Creepy as Glennise Brodie had not bothered to conceal the scrutinizing gaze that she had been focussing on Yvonne.

Yvonne's narcissism was at its peak when she heard her neighbor, Rika suggesting that they bought something to eat.

Recalling the sweet aroma that had hit her when she entered the store and the aesthetically pleasing desserts displayed, she nodded her head repeatedly in agreement to the offer being made.

Rika giggled when she noticed this action of her friend and peeked at the maids who had followed them inside the store.

These women did the same as what Paula had done and soon a young man in a butler's uniform arrived at their table.

'This is like being served at those maid and butler cafes that I had once visited with Vince!' Yvonne recalled a certain vacation that the siblings had taken in her past life which she had most certainly enjoyed.

The customers were treated like lords and ladies of noble families while the waiters and waitresses pretended to be butlers and maids to serve them.

The irony that Yvonne felt at this moment was indescribable as she observed the man who stood before them with a pleasant smile on his face.

'There it was just a play that people desired to experience once in a lifetime while here this has now become my normal life.' She shook her head at this thought as a soft giggle escaped from her lips.

This sound made them turn in her direction and Yvonne stopped when she noticed all eyes on them.

The butler was smitten when he saw that such cute little girls sat by themselves and had called him over to serve them.

"What can I get for the young misses?" He inquired with a smile and did not forget to bow a little as he said those words.

He was a commoner but was taught the perfect etiquettes by the owner of this store and hence he had no trouble in behaving appropriately before the nobles who visited the cafe.

Rika was the first to leap up as she yelled out what she desired to have.

"Blueberry pie!" She squealed in excitement with eyes sparkling at the thought of having her favorite dessert.

The server nodded at her with a smile which showed that he was happy to see her enthusiasm about the desserts sold in their store.

Glennise and Yvonne had turned towards her at the same moment with the same blank look on their faces which proved that they were having the same thoughts in their minds.

'She needs to learn how to curb her enthusiasm.' They scoffed simultaneously which made them glance at each other.

Yvonne by now had regained her calm and composed appearance which was different from her earlier panicking look which she had somehow managed to hide from the others.

Therefore, when she noticed Glennise's eyes on her, she smiled and then turned her line of sight towards the server in an unhurried manner.

The man had been prepared to take their orders so he alternated his gazes between them.

"Strawberry shortcake." Two voices uttered the same words, making the owners of the said voices to halt once they were done.

Yvonne turned her eyes towards the girl who had requested for the same dessert as she had.

Her mind was quick to recollect a line from the script that she had read, making her roll her eyes at the absurdity of her present situation.

{The three young girls grew together into women and had developed and adopted each other's habits.}

'Neither are we women yet nor have we grown up together.' She sneered and pushed those thoughts away from her mind.

'So what if they had similar opinions? Many people can enjoy the same dessert. There is no reason to find deeper meanings in such trivial things.' She scoffed at her mind which was trying to connect the two incidents together.

First, they met when they weren't supposed to and now, they had the same preferences in desserts.

However, she was not about to be felt alone so easily as the one sitting next to her was gleaming in excitement as she alternated her gaze at the two others sitting at the table.

"Miss Yvonne and Miss Glennise have such similar tastes." Rika exclaimed as she cupped her cheeks.

This made Yvonne glance at her from the corner of her eyes before she decided that it was best for her sanity if she ignored this little girl.

'Thank you for pointing that out oh so kindly.' She scowled and turned her eyes towards the server.

She had been at home for so long and the first time that she had stepped outside after weeks, she was forced to socialize and what was worse was that she had to mingle with people that she wished to stay far away from.

The man who had been all smiles while he was taking their orders now had an awkward and apologetic look on his face.

'I don't think that I am going to like whatever will come out of his mouth.' She declared and just as she had thought, she grimaced when she heard what he had to say.

"I apologize, young miss for we only have one piece of strawberry shortcake at this moment." He informed them with regret apparent on his face.

'Just my luck!' Yvonne scowled as that was the only thing that had caught her eyes when she had first walked into the store.

The soft and fluffy cake layered with thick cream and loaded with chunks of strawberries had entranced her and now she was being informed that they only had a single piece.

How could she accept this injustice without fighting back?

"But I had seen two slices of the shortcake when I had entered the store." She revealed which made the hesitant look on Glennise's face to ease as well.

These words made the server to chuckle sheepishly as he whispered something while bowing down to get closer to the table where these little girls sat.

"Another customer has just bought a piece." He disclosed this secret and then peeked at a table on the other side of the room.

When Yvonne's eyes fell on the person whom the server had gestured towards, she could feel her head spinning.

'At least wait for your child to eat before you eat it all by yourself!' She snarled as she watched her mother forking small portions of the strawberry shortcake into her mouth.

Raylene felt her daughter gazing at her and turned to wave and smile before she went back to the cake on her plate.

This further infuriated Yvonne as she had no other choice but to give up on her slice of the cake.

She was aware of the social differences between herself and the girl from a Ducal family.

This meant that she would have to give up on the dessert that had attracted her and all for the sake of societal pressures.

'Times like this makes me hate this society!' She growled in her heart and gripped her dress under the table.

The server was waiting on what they would decide on next and Glennise who had thought of herself as the leader of this little group took it upon herself to try and sort this mess out.
