Yvonne watched as the other girl who sat opposite her, straightened her back as she looked up at the server with an air of superiority wafting around her.
'A shunned daughter of the Ducal family is still a daughter of the Ducal family.' She recalled this sentence she had read from the script.
Though these words were meant for Glennise Brodie from the future, they held their meaning even in the present scenario.
That sentence could be interpreted as, even when Glennise was not given the love and care as the daughter of the Duke, no one had the right to put her down as she was born with the prestige that most could only dream of.
'She was despised by her father but had the respect of outsiders… What good could that do to a little girl like her?' She wondered and felt a strange sense of sympathy for her.
Thinking in this way, Yvonne felt pity for the child who had fixed her eyes on the server, ready to give out the next orders.
'Goodbye, my strawberry shortcake.' Yvonne said a silent prayer and wished her dessert goodbye as there was no way that Glennise would let her have it instead.
However, as Yvonne had looked out of the window to avoid watching the gruesome scene of her dessert being eaten by someone else, she heard Glennise speaking up.
"We can order something else." She suggested while peeking at Yvonne, as this way, none of them would get what they wanted.
Yvonne was shocked, to say the least, that Glennise had suggested this instead of announcing that she would have the shortcake all to herself.
This made her look at Glennise as though she was an anomaly which she had not expected to face today.
Thankfully, none of them present at the table had noticed her weird expressions as they were busy looking at the server.
'She isn't as mean as the Blue Bird made her out to be.' She smiled at the girl but before she could reply, the server had something important to say.
"Everything in the store has been sold." He revealed another shocking piece of information that made Yvonne frown.
This second surprise was not something that she could have imagined even in her wildest dreams.
Coming out of her incredulous daze, she turned her gaze to the shelves filled with goodies and then back at the man who was lying through his teeth.
'Care to explain what those sugary delights on the shelves are? Mud balls? Or a figment of my imagination?' She sneered and the mocking expression on her face made the server cough.
When he noticed the sneer on her face which was a polar opposite to the adorable appearance she had until now, he was startled and this made him almost choke on thin air.
'Master asked me not to tell anyone about this.' He recalled and was now trying hard to think of a way to placate the children without revealing the complete truth.
"Young Miss, they have been ordered by someone else and are to be delivered soon. We are waiting for our carriage driver to arrive." He informed them which was partially true.
They had received a large order today and since they did not have enough storage space, they had shifted a part of the order over to the front of the store.
The limited pieces that they had for sale today had already been extinguished as this was close to the time that they would usually shut the store down for the day.
The baker would once again prepare the ingredients meant for tomorrow and the store would only open once he had baked them to perfection the next day.
Yvonne and Raylene had spent the entire day shopping and it was close to sunset when they had entered this store.
So the explanation he had given was reasonable up to a certain extent.
But the fact that they had placed the goodies outside for the patrons to see while not allowing them to purchase the same was causing Yvonne to sneer at their business ethics.
'Does the man who owns this place even know what it means to offend someone and get the entire store to be shut down?' She scowled in her heart and hoped that someone would do that.
Rika had an awkward expression on her face as she lowered her head, refusing to speak up in this matter as she had gained the dessert that she desired.
"What do you have then?" An annoyed and irritated voice came from the girl who had auburn hair.
Yvonne glanced at the irked face she had at this moment and narrowed her eyes in scrutiny.
'So the villainess tendencies are present even though they remain dormant for most parts.' She surmised with a nod.
The server was hesitant at first but decided that he had spent a lot of his time here and he needed to get back to his work soon after he was done here.
"We have a piece of the strawberry shortcake and a tray of vanilla cupcakes." He retold what he had heard from the baker of the store.
Hearing the words 'Vanilla cupcakes' the two girls with Yvonne made grumpy faces as they shook their heads in ardent refusal.
This reaction had stunned her as she for one, liked vanilla cupcakes back when she was in her world.
Desserts were a sensitive subject for Yvonne who loved them and considered herself to be a connoisseur for the delicacies made out of the best ingredients.
However, she had never faulted vanilla cupcakes as they were versatile and could be had at any time and paired with any other dessert.
So the bafflement she felt when she noticed their disgusted faces was something she could not place her finger on.
"Mister Server, Please bring Miss Glennise the shortcake and I will have a cupcake." She instructed in a calm manner which made the waiter pause.
This was the first time that someone, especially a child had asked for the cupcake from their store and this made him take a moment to wrap his mind around this strange occurrence.
Once he had come back to his senses, he was met with Yvonne's raised brows which made him hurry to bring them their orders.
'What the hell is wrong with these people? I asked for a cupcake and not poison!' She scowled and then alternated her gaze between the two little girls who were staring at her unblinkingly.
"Miss Yvonne… You did that for me?" Glennise's affectionate and touching voice made the little girl feel the hair on the back of her neck stand at attention.
The shiver that ran down her spine made her shudder ever so lightly that none of them could make out her weird reaction.
Yvonne tilted her head to the side as she tried to comprehend what exactly was wrong with the daughter of the Duke.
'What have I done now that she looks so touched?' She wondered but to no avail.
However, when a thought passes through her mind, she widened her eyes and gulped in trepidation.
'Is she impressed with my selfless behavior? Did I just shoot myself in the foot?' She assumed as this was the only thing that could make sense to her at this moment.
The more she was trying to run away from her fate of being close to the Villainess, the more she was being pulled closer to her.
'I just want to eat some cake!' Yvonne growled inside her mind but it seemed that this simple desire aroused the other girl's interest in her.
