Episode 18 – In the Healer’s Guild…

Note from the Author: This chapter is written from the perspective of the Healer’s Guild Chief, Brandon Gage.

Enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, I was enjoying the tea in an elegant, graceful manner. Three days had passed since Lewin was fired. For the last five years, the country demanded me to take care of that dirty peasant, but now that fly in the ointment was finally gone. That fact alone set my heart at ease to an incredible degree. Reminding myself of Lewin’s hilarious expression of despair as I fired him, I bit into an exquisitely baked cookie while I enjoyed the fragrant aroma wafting from my cup of black tea.

….Ahhh, truly, this is supreme bliss.

It had become my daily routine to enjoy tea or wine while thinking of the desperation in his face at that time. Because his existence had been bothering me for such a long time, relishing in his despair was the best side dish to go with my tea or wine.

Umu. It might be an enjoyable pastime to once again hire a suitable plebeian, wring him out like a dirty rag, and then toss him aside.

“…I only thought of the idea just now, but it could actually work. If we receive too many complaints about odd jobs piling up from the factory site, we could use them to compensate for the situation.”

The downside is that I’ll have to see the irritating faces of those plebs every day, but after some self-restraint and patience, that irritation will become an unbeatable pleasure from seeing the despair on their faces after firing them.

While I was lost in my imagination, comfortably sipping my tea, a frantic knock resounded from the door of my office. Being disturbed in my moments of bliss and losing my train of thought on those ground-breaking ideas pissed me off, but I swallowed my anger.

“Enter.”

The moment the cue was given, the door was flung open and the staff member rushed into the room with a flushed expression.

“B-Brandon-san! Bad news!” (Employee)

“Don’t be in such a rush, it’s unsightly. What in the world happened?” (Brandon)

After rebuking the staff member for barging into my office, the staff member’s panic did not subside.

It must be really important.

“I apologize for coming into your office in such a rush, but now’s not the time for that! I’m here to report to you that the potion we formulated and sent to the royalty caused a severe adverse reaction, leaving several unconscious and in critical condition!” (Employee)

“WHAT? What the hell? What do you mean? That potion should have been perfect! How could there have been an adverse reaction? Why are they unconscious?” (Brandon)

Two months ago, we developed a new potion. After a one month trial period, I finally received approval from the country, but there was suddenly an adverse reaction…?! It’s true that it was a potion developed using a highly poisonous plant as the basis, but we succeeded in completely transforming that poisonous power into a strong healing effect. There should have been no mistake with the recipe itself, especially after the one month trial period. Therefore, it was most likely caused by human error, but… one of the best healers in the entire Healer’s Guild was involved in the production of this newly formulated potion. That incompetent person who was in charge of sorting, Lewin, was already fired. Our personnel lineup was flawless, so why would there be any mistakes? How the hell could you guys make a mistake under these perfect circumstances?!

“On top of that, I received tons of inquiries from patients who were participating in our potion clinical trials, and they had all experienced adverse reactions!!” (Employee)

“Adverse reactions appearing from not only the newly formulated potion we sent to the royalty, but also from other new potions as well…? What’s going on? EXPLAIN!!” (Brandon)

I slammed the desk in anger, and the teacup I had been drinking just a moment ago fell to the ground and shattered into a million pieces. The peaceful, elegant mood I was feeling a few moments ago vanished as blood rushed to my head.

“I’m still putting forth my best effort to investigate the situation on the production line, but I still tracked down the cause. In order to catch up, I would like to request Brandon-san to take charge over the matters with the royalty regarding the newly formulated potion.” (Employee)

“F*CK! SH*T! …DAAAAAMNIT!!” (Brandon)

What the f*ck is going on?! I slammed the desk over and over again, but the situation did not change one bit, and only my hand hurt.

“…Anyway, I understand the situation. I’ll handle the matter with the royalty, so tell all the healers that we have on hand to investigate the situation. Be sure to find the cause of all this!!” (Brandon)

The dull pain coming from my hand made me calm down a little bit, so I gave instructions to the staff member who had been watching me, frozen in place.

After the staff member hurried out of the room, I sat back down weakly in my chair and thought intensively about the situation at hand.

….It’s fine. Calm down. Thanks to the healers that I took under my wing and carefully trained, our Healer’s Guild stock has risen considerably over the last few years. This branch of the Healer’s Guild gained a reputation for being the best in the kingdom, and was known as the branch with the most effective Recovery Potions out of all the other branches. The All-Cure Potions were also the talk of the town, known for being effective against any ailment or sickness, just as the name suggested. This new potion was a failure, but the reputation of the Healer’s Guild won’t disappear overnight due to one single blunder. Using the potion that failed as the basis, it could be possible to make and release a new potion that works properly, so we could gain a little leeway to recover from this situation.

With that decided, hopefully this will reach a quick conclusion.

With a box of cakes and a large amount of money in hand, I left for the royal capital to explain the circumstances of this failure and try to regain my honor. In order to not rouse suspicion, I would have to explain that this time was truly an accident, and then convey to them that this won’t happen again in the future, so any more failures were absolutely not an option.

It’s okay. That incompetent peasant was already ousted from the Healer’s Guild, so the only people left in the Healer’s Guild must be competent people.

At that time, Brandon was truly convinced of that fact. He had no way of knowing that in the near future, that crucial newly formulated potion would never be able to be made a second time, and the quality of the rest of their potions, which had a reputation for having better effectiveness than other branches, would also eventually drop to the same level as the others.

I’ll probably be slowing down the rate at which I release, considering I’ve been doing double releases every single day with the occasional triple release for the past week or two… I’ll still be doing daily releases, though. I’ll do my best to release chapters in a way that minimizes cliffhangers, whether that means 1 chapter or 2 chapters that day. For example, if two consecutive chapters are continuations of the same situation, I’ll try to release both on the same day. Otherwise it’ll just be one chapter that day. The next arc is called “The Escape from the Bottom”. Please look forward to it!
