The woman insisted on following her daughter because she was scared of sitting with her husband and mother-in-law alone.
But she was not allowed.
So she sat down back disquieted. Meanwhile, she was so scared of making a noise, for fear that the noise she made might give her husband and mother-in-law an insight of the little secret she has kept for so many years.
And any little movement they made, scared the shit out of her.
"What are you so afraid of? My grandson's situation is under control now, and you should be happy and grateful," the old lady cautioned her with furrowed brows. At the same time, her son didn't react at all.
What was going through his mind was more than he could take, so he had no room in his brain to think about irrelevant things.
Or maybe, he didn't want to think too deeply into the matter, because, studying his wife's actions might give him a clue.
But he would rather wait for evidence before bringing the matter to a conclusion.
"Mother I'm fine, just a little nervous for my daughter, and a little scared for my son. I just hope the rest of the surgery goes on well," the woman explained to the old lady.
The old lady was already exhausted, so she didn't want to waste the little strength she had thinking.
"Mother, you are tired, I think I should take you home, so you can get some rest," the man said while holding the old lady's shoulder.
"No…no…no I will wait here till the surgery is over, I need to see my grandson," the old lady said, insisting on staying till she saw her grandson.
"Mother, my husband is right. You are too tired, you are no longer young. Why don't you go home and rest, I will give you a call once the surgery is over," the woman said in persuasion, as she couldn't wait for her husband and mother-in-law to disappear from her sight.
Having them by her side will continue to frighten her mind, and her soul will not find rest, so she needed to get rid of them.
The old lady saw that she was getting tired, so she stood up to say, "Alright...alright, I will go home now to take a rest. But make sure you put a call to me once he is out of the theatre. Meanwhile, I will get the housekeeper to prepare food for all of you."
"Thank you, mother," the woman said while standing to her feet.
"I will be back, but before then, do not cry anymore," the old lady instructed before leaving with her son.
Once they were out of her sight, the woman slumped on the chair while fanning herself with her hands.
She swore that she would have ended up being diagnosed with High Blood Pressure (HBP) if they left any minute later.
Outside the hospital, the man put his mother in a taxi and told her he would come home shortly, as he still had some important matters to settle in the hospital.
His explanation worked well with the old lady, as she agreed with him before leaving in the taxi.
Once the taxi was out of sight, the man went back into the hospital and stood in a hidden corner to monitor his wife, who seemed less tense and at ease at the moment, different from her emotions and actions when they (father and mother pair) were still present.
He found her actions fishy, but still let her be.
He monitored her for a while more before walking off to settle the dispute his son's friend's parents were causing.
They brought police to the hospital, to capture the family of the patient that crashed their son's car.
Done with this matter, he went back home to see his mother fast asleep in her room. He watched her for some minutes before leaving for another bedroom because he refused to have anything to do with his wife.
In the new bedroom, he still couldn't sleep as his mind kept wandering around from one point to another.
Back at the hospital, the woman was allowed to go and see her daughter, so the two stayed for a while before the surgery was over after hours.
When the woman went in to see her son, she cried out bitterly for a long while before finally stopping.
She kept sniffling as she continued looking at her son. She also couldn't touch because she was too scared to do so.
The young boy lying on the bed with an oxygen mask covering his nose looked lifeless. And if not for the heart monitor that was monitoring his heart rates, people would think he was dead.
The doctor consoled the woman and spoke to her on some crucial things to note, before leaving the room.
The woman didn't call her husband or mother-in-law immediately the surgery was over; instead, she notified them around 7 pm so that it would be too late for them to visit.
And she knew that even if the old lady was eager, her husband would not allow her to leave the house because of her health.
(Please take note that the doctors didn't plan on using the old lady's blood for transfusion even if her blood matched because of her age, but they allowed her to take the test for formality sake. And if things became critical for the patient, and they needed the blood from the old lady if they had no choice, they would only draw a little after checking up on the old lady's health and conducting series of tests to see if she was fit).
Now, the woman used her brains here, and it worked for her.
When she called up her husband to inform him, he answered her call, which was unlike him. So she just went straight to the point. But she didn't dare to mention the time the surgery ended, not knowing that the doctor had already informed her husband.
