CH.443 Miasma Dosimeter

I guess I’ll start this chapter off the same way as last one. Well, this is more of an update on my teleporting capabilities.

I can now reliably use Teleport to Seal without losing parts of myself, but bringing objects with me is still a bit questionable. And no, I haven’t tried with another person yet, but after I get the teleport with an object down, I will.

I’ve also been trying Short Teleport. As I said in the last chapter, it is a bit more advanced, because I have to use my vision to basically calculate the relative coordinates I want to teleport to. Figuring that part out wasn’t too bad, especially since Laura can help me calculate the coordinates, so Short Teleport wasn’t that much more than Teleport to Seal.

And once I get that down to the point where it is 100% percent reliable, I can teleport behind someone and Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru them.

But yeah. Teleportation ... is difficult. I always took it for granted because of HomeBase, but it really isn’t as simple as commanding a dungeon to do it for you.

Other than that, one more important thing has come to be. And it is something related to the dimensional fissures. And no, a new one isn’t going to appear, as far as I know.

But instead, this one is about the dimensional barrier observers I set all across the Kingdom when I planted all of those flower beds. They have finally collected enough data where the WDBDD can be made. And yes, I still haven’t renamed the weakening dimensional barrier detection device. Sure it could be called the dimensional fissure detector, but I’m not sure that is much better. Or maybe the miasma blob detector, as officially I do call dimensional fissures miasma blobs.

And since I did officially call the original ones miasma detectors, maybe I should call them something related to that.

Like ... Miasma Spike Detectors? ... that doesn’t sound all that good.

Miasma Dosimeter? Would that work? I know miasma isn’t radiation, but it isn’t like the people in this world know what radiation is.

Yeah. I think I like the name miasma dosimeter, or MD for short. ... No. That won’t work. MD could also stand for mana detector, or a million other things. It is a bit too generic. MsDm? I think that is better, but ... I don’t know.

I just need a simple name for it, so that when the miasma dosimeter at a guild spikes, they can send a message that their dosimeter is spiking, which could be a pre-sign of a fissure.

And even if it isn’t a pre-sign for a fissure, something strange will still be going on in that area for the miasma to spike. Be it a monster evolution or a miasma storm.

I guess I can explain that away very quickly. Miasma storm is exactly what it sounds like. It is an abnormal amount of miasma circling around an area, causing multiple monsters to evolve and likely go on a rampage. Because of that, miasma storms often lead to monster stampedes.

Usually miasma doesn’t cause a storm like that, as it is just slowly pulled towards the closest dungeon, but sometimes strange things can happen.

But miasma storms aren’t all bad either. Because sometimes, instead of having monsters evolve, they cause a dungeon to form. But again, that is like a 1% chance in a 1% chance, so I wouldn’t exactly consider it a reliable way of making new dungeons.

Anyway. Miasma storms and shortened names aside, I’ll finish the prototype for my miasma dosimeter and head over to the Dragon’s coast. Lady Janina can help me test it.

And yes. I did get her to admit that she does use miasma as a way of boosting her power. But she doesn’t want to teach me how to do that, as it can be incredibly dangerous, even with the protection of the System. At least not yet. Not until I know how to protect myself without having to rely on the System.

Naturally coming to the Dragon’s coast means playtime with the dragons, which I’m always happy to do.

And because I got Simorgh, Bird of Ancestry recently, I decided to go with all Winged Beasts today. Raiza the Storm Monarch, Roc from the Valley of Haze, Storm Shooter, Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys and my two Simorghs being the six monsters I summoned.

While the birds played with the dragons, Lady Janina helped me test out the miasma dosimeter. And it was working perfectly.

When the background miasma is at normal levels, which I took from the data the miasma blob detectors collected, the device will give a reading of 1.0. If the levels go down, the reading goes down towards zero, but if the levels go up, the number goes up.

After running the course a sufficient number of times, Lady Janina had me deactivate DNA Surgery. That naturally resulted in me transforming back into a human, only to be ordered to transform right back, and this time, I’d better have my wings.

And indeed I did have my wings. I don’t know if it was because I got used to them during the last hour and half or just the pressure of not disappointing Lady Janina, but I had my wings and it was nice.

I then ran the obstacle course again and it was just a bit more difficult than before. Because I still had to focus on keeping my dragon form. Using a skill, even one that is basically a transformation, does take a bit of effort, so I had to use a bit of focus on that.

But at the same time, I was now used to the course, so I didn’t have to use Draconic Boost any more. I was also better at gliding and didn’t fall on my snout as many times.

By the time we finally finished, I was tired and ready to go home, but I did have something to leave here. A seal plate for my Teleport to Seal spell. It will just be nice to have.

So I handed one to Lady Janina and asked her to put it into a place I can teleport to.

After that, largely because the supreme dragon was basically challenging me to do it, I decided to be dumb and teleport home with Teleport to Seal. I knew it was a bad idea, so I made sure to warn Lua before I did it, but I still decided to just go for it.

YOLO, right? Unless Monster Reborns are involved. Then you can live multiple times.

“Space, Take me to the place I’ve marked, Teleport to Seal.” I chanted, before I disappeared from the Dragon coast.

And like I somewhat predicted, something went wrong with the teleport.

Because for some reason, I’m in the air falling towards the ground. But at least I didn’t seem to be injured.

I quickly used Draconic Body and turned into my dragon form, before using my wings to turn my fall into a controlled glide.

I then looked around, realizing that I was very close to Alewatch, and when I looked up, I saw HomeBase floating where I’d left it.

Using a mix of my wings and Mana Flight, I flew upwards towards HomeBase and eventually landed.

Basically as soon as I did, I got a people running to me. Lua was coming to make sure I was okay, and Magie had something she urgently needed to say.

“Master Brian. Someone tried to use a long range spell on HomeBase. Likely a spying spell of some kind. It was blocked by the barrier, and diverted, but you need to know it happened.”

“Oh? So that is why my teleport failed.” I said, mostly to myself.

“Your teleport?” Magie questioned.

“Yeah. I tried to return home with Teleport to Seal, but instead I ended up outside the HomeBase barrier. I didn’t even consider it because I can teleport here with the dungeon. But yeah, the barrier wouldn’t be able to identify me if I use long range teleportation magic. Something I need to work on.”

“Ah! I see. Good to know, Master. I shall inform Endy of this.”

“Yeah. Make sure we don’t have any emergency forces deployed because of my mistake or something.” I told her.

I then had Lua check me over, and she was sufficiently happy that my impulsive tendencies didn’t cause any harm. But she was still disappointed that I decided to teleport from that far of a distance. Without telling anyone.

I ended the day by checking my status, because I had a feeling at least something had changed.
