277 Chapter 277: Lovely

He tapped the desk thoughtfully and said, "It could be Nathalia. She's too smart sometimes." He sounded convinced. Matt defended Nathalia instantly, "No. It's not Nathalia. She won't do anything like that." As soon as he said it, he regretted it.

Curt squinted his eyes. One couldn't tell if he was annoyed or pleased. "You sound like you know her very well." He said plainly.

Matt's heart raced. He was sweating nervously. He tried to think fast to react and decided to just tell the truth. "Yes. I used to like her a lot. She's a strong-minded and brave girl. She's been through a lot of tough times, and she never gave up. She's touched me. There's something innocent and pure about her that most people lack nowadays, but since I knew that she's with Spencer, I dismissed the thought of being with her. Hence, I've decided to marry Amy."

He said it so clearly and eloquently that it sounded like he had rehearsed it many times before.

Curt listened quietly while looking at him in his eyes for a good while before he nodded, "That's good to know. She's not your girl. What's meant to be will be."

Matt heaved a sigh of relief. "I've learned. I won't go for things that are not meant to be mine." Pun intended. He noticed that Curt looked less intense and quickly changed the subject. "I've asked for the news to be deleted, but most of the media companies refused. I don't really know what to do."

When he realized how the name of Davidson could give him power and authority, he found it stupid the way in which he used to deal with things. Meanwhile, the more he got to know the family and the business, he became more cautious with what to say to his father. Not everyone was capable of managing a company like Davidson's.

Everything he was doing was watched carefully. There was his father Curt, as well as Spencer. When he did something excellently, people would take it for granted, and if he did it badly, then he was to be laughed at as people would naturally compare him with Spencer or even Curt.

With the incident that happened with Curt and Mrs. Davidson, he had thought it over and over and still couldn't find a proper way to deal with it. Sometimes he would recall the time when he worked at the police station and missed its simplicity.

However, he knew that there was no going back.

Curt gazed at Matt for a while, and a smile appeared on his face. "It's alright. Just leave it be." He had been observing Matt quietly since his first day at work, and only till now did he decide that he was capable. He has been calm and thoughtful. In a few years' time, with some training, he should be a great leader. He thought to himself.

Curt turned his laptop off, stretched his arms, and rather casually and very unexpectedly, he asked, "Do you hate me, Matt?"

Matt lifted his brows in surprise. He watched his father for a while, trying to see where the question came from, but Curt's face betrayed nothing. "Huh? Why? Dad, how can I hate you at all? You are my dad. I am what I am only because of you." He said earnestly.

Curt saw the sincerity on Matt's face and felt touched. He patted Matt's shoulder and said, "Matt, you are a very good son. I expect a lot from you."

Again, Matt was surprised. He should feel closer to his father, yet somehow he felt more distant. "Thanks, dad." He said properly.

"Shall we have lunch then?" Curt opened the bag of takeaway and said rather cheerfully. Just then, there came a knock at the door.

"Someone's here to see you, Mr. Curt Davidson." It was Ken, Curt's assistant. He sounded rather anxious.

Curt was annoyed, thinking those irritating journalists are like flies. "No visitors allowed." He said plainly.

"Please don't... Mr. Curt Davidson doesn't allow..." It sounded like Ken was trying hard to stop the visitor from breaking in.

The door flew open, and in walked a very well-dressed lady. "Curt, how have you been? It's been a long time." It was Emma, in a slim white dress which presented her curves beautifully.

Ken followed behind, looking awkward.

"Ah. It's you." Curt said plainly, then turned to Matt and Ken, "Will you please excuse us." Ken and Matt exchanged a brief look and left.

Matt took another look at Curt and aunt Emma before closing the door behind. He knitted his brows as he could sense the odd atmosphere in the room.

When he passed by Curt's secretary's desk, he winked at him. About half an hour later, he received a phone call from the secretary. "Mr. Matt Davidson, the woman, has left and she didn't look pleased. It seemed like they had a fight."

Matt wasn't surprised to hear so. Emma is Susan's sister. Of course, she didn't come here with any good intention. "What did they talk about? Do you know?" He could sense that something was wrong, but he couldn't figure out what it could be.

"I'm not sure. But I've noticed that the boss's favorite teacup was broken into pieces. I wondered who smashed it." It was one of the most valuable things in the office, an item that Curt valued very much.

"I see. If you find out anything, let me know." Matt said.

"Will do."

Nathalia had been visiting Mrs. Davidson daily. As soon as she finished her classes in university, she would head straight to the hospital. Usually, the bodyguards would be carrying bags of stuff for Mrs. Davidson, following behind.

Spencer had two of his best bodyguards guarding outside the room, two private nurses to look after Mrs. Davidson, as well as a chef, a nutritionist, two helpers, and an arranged driver. He made sure that there was always someone around to take care of his mother, twenty-four hours a day.

All the staff was well-trained and well-behaved, so it was quiet in the room most of the time. As soon as Nathalia showed up, her presence lit up the room instantly.

The bodyguards greeted her with a smile, "Mrs. Nathalia Davidson." Everyone in the room welcomed her pleasantly. Nathalia nodded to them amiably.

"Mum, how are you feeling today?" Nathalia asked with a grin as she went to sit by Mrs. Davidson and gave her a hug.

Her cheerfulness brought the whole room into life. Mrs. Davidson was lying in bed, looking out of the window aimlessly, but as soon as she heard Nathalia coming in, she sat up excitedly. "Oh, Nathalia, I feel much better. You must be tired of coming to see me every day after class. Don't you worry about me, you know. There are plenty of helpers here anyway."

Others giggled quietly, thinking Mrs. Davidson has been waiting for Mrs. Nathalia Davidson all day.

"I'm not tired at all. I look forward to coming to see you every day. I would miss you terribly if I didn't come to see you before going home." Nathalia said sweetly.

Mrs. Davidson smiled. "Aww, aren't you the sweetest thing?!"

"Here. Beautiful flowers for my beautiful mum." Nathalia handed Mrs. Davidson a bunch of red roses, which smelled delightful.

Mrs. Davidson looked at the bunches of flowers, lilies, violets, hydrangeas..., that sat nicely on the table, by the window. "Thank you, my sweet child. You are turning this room into a garden." She said with a happy grin.

"And you are the queen of the garden!" Nathalia replied cheekily. Everyone giggled happily.

"Lucy, do we have any more vases?" Mrs. Davidson asked. Lucy was one of the two helpers.

"Oh, yes, Mrs. Davidson, there are plenty of vases for plenty more flowers," Lucy answered cheerfully. She took out a lovely vase and put the roses in delicately.

"Lovely. Lovely. I like it a lot." Mrs. Davidson looked at the flowers approvingly. Then she turned to Nathalia and asked gently, "You must be hungry. Dan, is dinner ready soon?" Dan was the chef who was busy cooking in the kitchen.
