287 Chapter 287: Hope Had Forsaken Her

Nathalia burst out laughing. "Hahaha. I love that." Aren't these two lovely? Nathalia thought pleasantly.

As Mrs. Davidson was about to say something, the bell rang. "Huh. Who can it be at this hour?"

Spencer frowned and went to open the door. It was another surprise. What's he doing here?

"Spencer, how have you been? I've come to see your mother." The man said with a smile. Spencer looked stern and unwelcoming.

Nathalia came over. Hmm. I thought it was dad.

"Who is this?" She asked curiously. The man looked to be in his early forties, with a very handsome face, and there was an elegant charm about him.

Spencer didn't answer, and Nathalia could feel that he wasn't happy with the visitor.

"Who is it?" Mrs. Davidson asked as she came over. The man's face lit up as soon as he saw Mrs. Davidson. His eyes seemed to sparkle.

"Sue." He exclaimed excitedly.

Mrs. Davidson frowned and looked at the man with a confused look. Then all of a sudden, her face lit up as she located the face in her memories, "Jake? Is it you, Jake?" Her voice trembled.

She could hardly believe it. She felt like she had just woken up from a long, long sleep of endless dreams.

Jake nodded emotionally. "Yes. It's me. Yes. You finally remember! Oh. I'm so happy."

Touched, Mrs. Davidson grew emotional as well. "I'm so sorry. I lost my memories and had forgotten you...I'm so happy to see you..." Tears filled their eyes.

When she got sick, she forgot everyone except her son and husband, and she cut all connections and isolated herself.

Jake opened his arms and hugged her, "Sue. Finally, we meet again!"

When he heard the news about her divorce, he was stunned, and the first thing he did was to confirm it. As soon as he was sure of its validity, he booked the earliest flight he could get and flew over.

Even if she still can't remember me, even if she has forgotten everything, I want to be there for her. It must be tough for her now. He told himself.

When she was married, he stepped back and watched her quietly from a distance. He respected her and her marriage.

Now she's decided to divorce, does it mean, does it mean that... Will I have a chance? He had wondered.

Nathalia gazed at them in surprise. Who is this man? She tapped Spencer's hand, hoping he would introduce him. But he ignored her again. Why is Spencer upset? Strange.

Just then, a slightly angry voice came from behind Jake. "Susan, are you divorcing me because of him?"

No one noticed when Curt arrived. He had stood there watching them quietly. He saw them hug each other emotionally, and he remained calm, but there was anger in his eyes.

And to everyone's surprise, Mrs. Davidson straightened her back, lifted up her chin, and answered confidently, "If you'd like to think so, I won't say no."

Curt was now furious. "Susan! Don't forget that, that, you, you are my wife." He stammered.

Mrs. Davidson looked displeased. "You are my husband, and you've had numerous mistresses and bastards. It's you that betrayed me. It's you that ruined this marriage." She said righteously. She knew that she had been loyal and devoted to their marriage, and he was on the wrong side.

His heart ached as if there were needles poking it. "Sue...if, if I change, if I try to be a good husband, will you..." he stammered timidly, his head down, too guilty to look her in her eyes.

Mrs. Davidson was stunned. It was completely out of her expectation. There was a surprise, pain, joy, confusion, hesitation... in her look. She sighed very quietly and said, "No. I won't. You don't love me. Don't force yourself to change. I've lost my patience and hope. I don't want any more disappointment, so set me free."

She was speaking her heart out. Yes. She had given up. She had waited long enough. Hope had forsaken her.

Curt looked at her and said calmly, with determination, "I can't." He turned around and left.

Anger flared up in Mrs. Davidson, and she yelled after him, "Curt, you are the most selfish man in the world. It's my life! And you can't control me!"

Curt walked straight into the lift. He looked at the reflection of himself in the door of the lift. It was a face so calm and motionless that it surprised himself, and he dropped the box of chocolate muffins. They scattered around the floor.

Spencer had remained quiet the whole time. He looked troubled. Nathalia's hand reached for his. He took it instantly and held it tight.

Jake looked at Mrs. Davidson affectionately and assured her, "Sue, don't worry. I will help you. I promise."

Jake was one of the few top solicitors known worldwide. People had spent millions to hire him, and he had never lost a case.

Mrs. Davidson shook her head tiredly. "Thanks, Jake, it's ok. It's personal. I can deal with it myself."

Jake nodded, "Sure. I understand, but please know that whenever you need help, just let me know, and I will be here for you." His voice was gentle and soothing.

Spencer looked more annoyed. Worried that he would get emotional, Nathalia teased with a smile, "Mum, aren't you going to introduce this handsome gentleman?"

Mrs. Davidson smiled and said, "Ah, sure. This is Jake, my good friend from childhood. He's like a brother to me. Jake, this is my daughter-in-law, Nathalia. She's the sweetest girl."

Like a brother? Nathalia lifted her eyebrows and thought, the way he looks at mum says something different. He's obviously in love with mum. Does mum know? He looks like he can be a great husband to mum.

"Nice to meet you, Jake. Do you mind if I ask if you are married or have children?" she said bluntly.

Jake was rather taken aback, and for the first time, he diverted his attention from Mrs. Davidson to Nathalia and was surprised to find her exceptionally pretty. Her eyes seemed to glow, and her face was gentle but determined.

"Hahaha. No, I don't mind. I'm not married, and I don't have kids. And a pleasure to meet you, too." He wasn't offended by Nathalia's bluntness at all and replied with a smile.

Spencer was alert. He glared at Jake briefly.

"I see." Nathalia grinned. Hmmm, he's completely different from dad, the opposite of him, I would say.
