Well, at least she had hoped her parents would deem their wedding anniversary something more important than work. It was their wedding anniversary for Christ's sake! If they did, skip their anniversary for work then Lady Melissa might as well snap.
She knew it wasn't in her position to snap or anything but it was their wedding anniversary, and as much as she had respected their wishes and knew her boundaries, she would be a little angry at them.
Yes, work was important but it was a wedding anniversary, their wedding anniversary, Lady Melissa would never understand why they would skip such an important event to do work if they did skip their anniversary.
Lady Melissa had hoped that they really wouldn't skip out their anniversary since then everything that she had prepared for them would go to waste, and they wouldn't even be able to relax, even if it was just for a few hours.
It wasn't as if her parents would be with her for the whole day on their anniversary, she knew that was unrealistic since they were the Duke and Duchess of one of the five founding families, a full day with them was practically a dream.
It was unrealistic, and just something which could never be achieved, no matter what, unless maybe her father and mother step down from their position and Lady Melissa finally becomes the head of the family, which she probably wouldn't be until the next couple of months.
Or, if she was maybe lucky enough she wouldn't be the head of the family until a couple of years.
Lady Melissa didn't want to bear all the responsibilities of being the head of the family, her hectic schedule would be obviously more packed and hectic when she became the head of the family, and she was still too young to even be the head of the family.
Or at least Lady Melissa considered herself to be too young to be the head of the family.
Lady Melissa wondered how long her father would continue being the head of the family, before it would inevitably be passed down to her.
Even though Lady Melissa would dislike being the head of the family there were a lot of perks that would come along with it.
For starters, her parents wouldn't have to worry about a thing anymore, since she would take care of everything regarding the Shayla estate and important meetings.
A disadvantage though was that she would lose a lot of her free time, so she best makes use of her free time now for the future.
In Lady Melissa's previous life she was actually supposed to be the next head of the family after her father would step down from being the head of the family or after he passed away.
Lady Melissa had however declined the offer when her father told her about it, and hence the next head of the family, who was originally supposed to be Lady Melissa had changed into one of their distant relatives.
Relatives, that word had brought a sour taste to Lady Melissa's mouth, she absolutely despised her relatives, well at least most of them.
Most of them had been using Lady Melissa's family for money, and status, to put it in simple words they were gold diggers.
At least the most of them, there were of course the few decent relatives she had who were genuine relatives, that cared about Lady Melissa and her other family members.
Though most of them had already passed away, like her great-aunt.
Her parents, mainly her mother, who was the toughest woman Lady Melissa knew in her entire 20 years of living, was one of the softest people in the world whenever it was about family.
The Duchess obviously had a soft spot for her family members, and because of that those very same family members would try to take advantage of her, and exploit her for their own beneficial gain.
It had happened multiple times, and the Duchess knew what they were doing, but she let them.
The reason? Because they were family. When Lady Melissa first heard of this she was in utter shock, and her mouth was wide open.
Just how could her mother let herself be used like that? She understood family, and that blood was thicker than water, but this was a completely different situation.
It didn't only happen a few times, it had happened numerous times, which was why Lady Melissa was quite pissed off seeing her mother just let it all happen.
Thankfully the Duke knew what the Duchess' relatives were doing as well, and he tried his best to prevent the Duchess from taking advantage of her too much.
If it wasn't for him, the Duchess would obviously be taken advantage of many more times.
But, when the Duke had tried to prevent the Duchess from doing so it would usually lead to arguments with one another.
The arguments could last for a few hours, or maybe even a few days or weeks, but it would never reach months, they didn't want to waste too much time arguing with each other.
Lady Melissa's parents understood the concept of time, and they wanted to make the most of it if possible.
Lady Melissa had learned not to be so gullible in her second life, though she was quite shocked to hear her mother being so generous to her relatives if that was even the right word for it.
Maybe naive was the more suitable word for it.
Even as naive and innocent as Lady Melissa was in her first life, she knew about her relative's intentions.
It was as clear as day to her, her relatives (from her mother's side) would only appear when they needed something, like a favour or some money.
The first few times it happened Lady Melisa let it slide, maybe they were just too busy to meet with us.
Lady Melissa thought, trying to justify her mother's relative's actions.
