"Thank you, Lady Melissa!"
The children said in unison as Lady Melissa nodded her head, she didn't know exactly what to do, as she saw someone entering the room from the corner of her eye- it was Sophia and Clara.
Lady Melissa approached the children, as she saw one of the children being left out from the happy dance, a nickname that Lady Melissa had made for the children because they were currently happy and dancing.
"Hello."
Lady Melissa said as she greeted the child, who refused to even spare a glance at her as the director and his wife shared a look, afraid of what was to come if the child had even talked to Lady Melissa, wanting to prevent the child from doing so.
Lady Melissa looked at the child confusedly, was she perhaps ignoring her? Or did the child not hear her the first time Lady Melissa greeted her?
"Hello."
Lady Melissa repeated once more, greeting the child for a second time as she made sure to increase her tone this time, just in case the child didn't hear her the first time she had greeted her.
Lady Melissa waved her arms at the child, who still refused to even spare Lady Melissa a glance, as the child kept staring at the wall, her hands tucked between her armpits whilst doing so.
"I'm Lady Melissa, it's nice to meet you."
Lady Melissa said as she took out her arm, wondering whether this would be a better approach for children since she wasn't exactly the best when it came to dealing with them.
Lady Melissa admitted that her way of introducing herself was a little…weird especially considering the fact that she was introducing herself to children- if it were other nobles it'd be fine, but this was children.
"I know about you."
The girl finally spoke up as Lady Melissa's eyes widened a bit, was that the reason why the child had been staring at the wall the whole time? Perhaps the girl had gotten the wrong impression of Lady Melissa.
"You came here to take one of us right? So you seem all 'kind' and 'great'."
The child said once more as Lady Melissa was a little shocked, the child looked as if she was three years old, though it was probably because of the lack of food that she looked that way.
If Lady Melissa were to actually guess, perhaps the child was around five to seven years old.
"As much as I love children, I wouldn't like to bring one of you home."
Lady Melissa bluntly said as the child looked offended, Lady Melissa then realized that she had worded her sentence wrongly, it sounded like she was too good to bring home any of the children.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
The child said, rudely to Lady Melissa, a look on her face that told Lady Melissa that the child had somehow detested her even more because of what she had said to her.
"Apologies, I phrased it wrongly, I like children, but I have too many responsibilities of my own to raise a child, hence, I won't be adopting any one of you. Now, is that all you have to ask?"
Lady Melissa asked as the child's face softened for a split second, or at least it looked like that to Lady Melissa, though she couldn't really tell either because the child was still facing the wall.
Lady Melissa wasn't the best at apologizing, in fact, she had never actually given a proper apology- to anyone before, yet, at least. So she hoped that this was a proper apology.
Lady Melissa had apologized before of course, multiple times, though she wasn't genuinely sorry, so hence she didn't consider it a proper apology, but a 'fake' apology, after all, she didn't have to apologize either.
Lady Melissa had a higher status than almost everyone- so most of the time she didn't have to apologize to anyone, because of her status, and no one dared to confront her about it because of her status as well.
"You can leave now."
The child said as Lady Melissa didn't know what to say next, it was obvious that the child detested her or resented her for some reason that she didn't know about, though she assumed it was because of the other orphans in the orphanage being adopted by nobles.
Though the better term would be taken care of, since she was sure most of the nobles didn't carw about the children anyways, and apparently the child was smart enough to figure that out on her own, which Lady Melissa was impressed about.
Although Lady Melissa knew that she wasn't wanted by the child, for some reason she wanted the child and her to be on good terms, or at the very least on alright terms.
Lady Melissa didn't want to be hated by a child, nor did she want to be hated by anyone, but for some weird reason, she just had an urge to not make the child hate her.
"How about this, I'll leave you alone if you look at me in the face alright? I promise to leave you alone then."
Lady Melissa said with a smile, as the child completely froze, thinking about Lady Melissa's offer for a second before she shook her head, she wasn't going to look at her.
"You always lie."
The child said as Lady Melissa grew confused, what did the child mean by that?
The director and his wife had wanted to intervene in the conversation long ago, but they were stopped by Clara and Sophia who were observing Lady Melissa's interaction with the child.
"What do you mean?"
Lady Melissa asked, confused with what the child was saying, ever since she started talking with the child she couldn't help but grow more and more confused with everything the child was saying to her.
Why did the child resent her so much that she didn't even want to look at her? And why did the child say that 'you always lie'?
