JUNE 8, 2019
Four weeks had gone by in a blink of an eye after Zoey's pregnancy was confirmed. Time had flown away so fast that no one even noticed it.
"Boss Zhou! Boss Handsome is here!" Melanie Xue peeked through the door of the office, a large grin plastered on her lips before she opened the door for Paul Qian.
"Boss Handsome, Boss Zhou says come in." Raising her brows in an up and down motion, Melanie Xue beamed him the sweetest smile although Zoey hadn't even said anything yet.
"Thank you Miss Xue, but I'm not —" Just before Paul Qian could finish his correction on how Melanie Xue addressed her, she scooted away as if she was the Flash.
"Uh..." Blinking his eyes, Paul Qian shrugged his shoulders as he headed inside the office.
"She's flirting with you." In a matter-of-fact tone, Zoey shook her head sideways as she thought of opening a seminar for ladies like Melanie Xue to learn how to flirt.
How could she think she could seduce Paul Qian just by calling him 'Boss Handsome'?! Was she thinking the same method would work on Paul Qian? Melanie Xue should know that Zoey used different methods on different species!
"Missus Zhou, I don't think Miss Xue thinks the same." As usual, Paul Qian denied it as he remained composed and unmoved.
"Tsk. Don't blindly follow Matt's cold demeanor — his attitude is really contagious." Zoey clicked her tongue, couldn't believe that Paul Qian was slowly turning into the second Matthew Xi with how dense he had become.
"Master said he'll pick you up later and here's your lunch." Ignoring Zoey's remarks, Paul Qian placed the lunch box he was ordered to personally deliver because for some reason, Matthew Xi was temporarily banned in this building.
"Pick me up, meeh." Rolling her eyes, Zoey scoffed as she hadn't forgiven Matthew Xi just yet.
His sin? Being too handsome. Zoey was annoyed!
"Madam, please treat our master kindly. My colleagues are suffering." Glancing at Zoey's annoyed reaction, Paul Qian cleared his throat as he remarked.
For the past one month, Paul Qian had more interaction with Zoey more safely without anyone getting jealous. Hence, one way or another, they became friends and not at the same time. After all, Zoey was a cool person and it was hard not to be friends with her.
Still, there was a clear line between them. Moreover, they had a common denominator as they were both friends with Enzo Li.
"Paul, why are you still with my husband?" Instead of sympathizing with his colleagues due to the King's foul mood, Zoey inquired with her chin resting on the back of her hand.
Her gaze never left Paul Qian who was standing across the desk. She saw him ponder for a moment, as if finding her question a little strange.
"Well, I heard what he did not too long ago from mom — you know, the time you had to tag along with her for your own safety." Vaguely recalling that day, Zoey shrugged her shoulders as she never had the chance to ask him about that.
A normal person's decision would be to resign the next day. After all, Matthew Xi's actions were irrational and petty. Many people were affected just because he was jealous.
Hence, Zoey wondered how Paul Qian could remain loyal to Matthew Xi. Heck, Zoey would slap him with her resignation letter the next day if that happened to her!
"Miss Zhou, because there are two kinds of people in my perspective." After a minute of contemplation, Paul Qian answered.
"Ah?"
"The one who leads and one who follows the lead." In a matter-of-fact tone, Paul Qian spoke while staring at the confused Zoey. "My history with Young Master is more than a simple disturbance in the smooth flow. I respect him and I know that he's still a human. Therefore, his unreasonable rampage is understandable." Paul Qian's voice didn't fluctuate as he relayed his thoughts straight from the heart.
To him, he was meant to serve Matthew Xi. Be a loyal subject, and accept that the leader he followed was not perfect. Just like him, he made mistakes here and there, but Matthew Xi never dwelled on them.
How dare Paul Qian dwell on that single disturbance in his life? He had made tons of mistakes yet Matthew Xi still trusted him completely. Holding a grudge for that was just Paul Qian being shameless... at least, for him, it was a shameless act and he didn't have the nerve to be that shameless.
"Wow... super loyal! I'd think you are the real empress while I'm just the whiny concubine." Zoey was in awe at how deep Paul Qian's response was.
It's rare to find someone like Paul Qian whose ambition was high but not too high as well. For him to value his relationship with Matthew Xi more than anything was commendable that even Zoey was speechless.
"Also, once the heart takes over, it's hard for the mind to counter it. At the very least, I had the chance to prove that Master is also a human." Smiling meekly, Paul Qian added before he slightly bowed his head. "And I should thank Miss Zhou for that." Paul Qian took this opportunity to thank Zoey for making Matthew Xi more human.
In retrospect, although Matthew Xi seemed to be perfect, he was more or less like a robot. He worked day and night, sometimes even calling Paul Qian in the middle of the night for business purposes.
Not to mention, Matthew Xi appeared as if he knew everything like it was written on the back of his hand. But now, Paul Qian sometimes witnessed his boss in a trance thinking about something that confused him.
For example, why Zoey was annoyed at him for no reason; or Zoey being happy and sad just by watching a movie. It was just a simple example, but for Paul Qian — and probably for Vivian Xi — the emotions that Matthew Xi had grown to learn being with Zoey was enough for them to be relieved.
"Ehh... you make me want to forgive my hubby." Fluttered at how high Paul Qian regarded her as Matthew Xi's wife, Zoey waved her hand.
"Well, tell him I lifted his temporary ban and he should thank you for it." Zoey giggled, her attitude changed instantly as her heart felt moved knowing how Matthew Xi changed because of their love.
"Thank you." Pleased that Zoey's mood had lightened, Paul Qian bowed his head again before bidding his farewell.
Watching him exit the office, the corner of Zoey's lips curled into a smile as her eyes softened. "My husband is really surrounded by good people. Why am I worrying for nothing?" She muttered, as she had been bothered recently; as if she had sensed something bad would happen.
"Well, time for lunch, my baby bun!" Shrugging her shoulders, Zoey turned her attention back to the lunchbox with a smile as she felt she had an appetite to eat everything Vivian Xi sent her.
Little did everyone know, the storm was about to hit them after the long artificial calm and peace.
