"Sarah, wait!"
Zachery called out, jogging behind Sarah until they reached the hospital's driveway.
"What, Zach?" Upon stopping in her tracks, Sarah turned around. Pain and disappointment was plastered on her front as she held onto the paper bags in her hand tightly.
"I --"
"You're busy? With work?" Asked Sarah in a tone laced with sarcasm.
Sarah scoffed while shaking her head lightly. "I would have understood if you had told me the truth. You didn't have to lie. But…"
Her words trailed off as another faint scoff escaped her lips. Sarah bit her bottom lip as she was lost of words.
All she had done in this ridiculous setup was to understand him. She didn't nag, she didn't demand too much, she tried to be the first one to understand him whenever he wanted some peace.
Yet, once again, Zach ended up lying to her. Sarah would have been less hurt if Zach had told her the real reason he couldn't make it tonight. Even if it would have hurt her, she would have tried to understand him, as always.
However, Zach decided to lie to her. For what reason? Sarah couldn't comprehend why she deserved to be lied to, over and over again.
"...but, why?"
"I just, just, didn't want to hurt you." Distressed, Zach sighed heavily as he sported an apologetic look. "If I said I couldn't make it because Beth needs me, I know it would've broken your heart."
"And you didn't think that letting Beth into this marriage, choosing her over your legal wife, and treating me as your mistress won't hurt me?" Out of pain, Sarah scoffed as she listed down the facts that he didn't think about before this one.
Sarah had been hurt by him over and over again. Yet, she still accepted him despite all that. How could he even think that telling her the real reason could even compare to the pain she had gone through?
Upon hearing her last remarks, Zach was rendered speechless. What else could he say? What Sarah said was the truth. He didn't consider all those things until he saw her as a woman.
"Zach, I…" Sarah choked.
The tears she had been holding back since day one attempted to escape from her eyes. Her jaw tightened as she swallowed a mouthful of saliva.
After a deep inhale and a minimum exhale, she finally spoke. "I also need you, yet, understanding you is my priority. Even if the reason was another woman, I would have smiled and said it's fine. However, lying to me over and over again makes me wonder if I really have the slightest chance to occupy even a tiny bit of space in your heart."
Sarah expressed all her emotions; she's in pain. Sarah didn't deserve this. She wanted him, but all these lies were slowly killing her from inside.
But deep down, Sarah couldn't truly blame Zach. It was partially her fault too. For holding onto him, hoping for him to see her worth, and love her just as much as she loved him.
She couldn't see that now, though. Was she just hoping for nothing? Were all her efforts for naught? What was she to him? Not to mention, the child in her womb that she had yet to tell him about.
What would be her and their child's role in Zach's life?
"...I'm -- I'm pregnant." After a while, Sarah finally relayed the news she had been meaning to tell him. She just didn't find the perfect timing and she didn't want to tell him about it under these circumstances.
However, due to all the emotions, Sarah blurted out before she could stop herself. Still, she kept her hurt yet strong front as this would be all or nothing.
Upon hearing those two words, Zach's eyes widened ever so slowly. Surely, he didn't expect that from her. He didn't know how to take it in.
"You -- what did you say?" Zach asked in disbelief.
"You heard me right, Zach. I'm pregnant. I wanted to tell you before, but I didn't have an opportunity. I need you but I know I can't fully have you. Under my condition, I'm still thinking about your well-being because I'm worried you couldn't eat well with how hectic your schedule is."
Laced with sarcasm and mockery, Sarah scoffed as she shook her head.
"Little did I know, you're not that busy. You're here, tending to your mistress while blatantly lying to your legal wife who has only been kind to you."
Sarah stressed all her words as she knew everything were facts. It was her first time expressing herself honestly and she didn't feel sorry about it.
"I didn't deserve this, Zach. Me and the child in my womb didn't deserve this." Sarah added, shaking her head as she slowly turned around.
'How foolish,' She thought internally as she took her first step away from him.
Sarah didn't expect anything from him anymore. She couldn't even think straight as she just wanted to go away. Everything felt too much for her at the moment.
Just as Sarah took several unfaltering steps away, Zach suddenly grabbed her wrist and gently pulled her into his arms.
"I'm sorry, Sarah. I really am sorry." Under his breath, Zach expressed his apology while caressing her back.
Sarah could feel his trembling shoulder as her eyes softened. Slowly, the tears she managed to stop earlier finally rolled down her cheeks.
"And, are we really having a child? Are you really pregnant?" Slowly, Zach held on her shoulders as he pushed her back a little.
He stared at her straight in the eye, Sarah could feel the delight flickering across them. She nodded and her heart melted upon seeing his lips stretch into a wide smile.
"I'm so happy…" He whispered, embracing her tightly before loosening his grip afraid he would hurt her.
"Zach…"
"Sarah, I know I am selfish but I am happy. I will take responsibility." While hugging her, Zach expressed which broke the last straw of Sarah's vulnerable defense walls.
"I love you, Sarah." Those words that she had longed to hear from him incapacitate her from questioning other matters.
She was in bliss and what mattered to her right now was this moment.
"I love you more, Zach."
