Matthew's brows twitched upon hearing Inigo's remorseless explanation. However, it was the truth. Inigo may be a dangerous, psychotic, and cold-blooded lad. But, he would go rage a war if someone harmed a member of his small militia.
Hence, the reason every subordinate Inigo had was loyal to him. Because they knew that Inigo was loyal to them. Angelo would vouch for that if not because of the incident.
"I can't believe how these ladies swoon over my brother, he's not even that charming!" Inigo dissed bitterly, sporting a disgusted look on his face.
Indeed, Angelo died sooner in their previous life. He died in the hands of the only kin he had. That girl had then continued to work under Nikolai before the latter grew tired of her and dumped her when he had enough of her.
It was cruel, but that's reality. Nikolai was that kind of person. He would betray anyone or dispose even those loyal to him once he had enough of their whims.
It was still a surprise for them that Nikolai's admiration towards Zoey lasted this long. Well, one's desire sparks to flames the harder something is to get.
"Ha…" Angelo scoffed, rendered speechless at the ridiculous explanation he had heard. "Ha ha ha!"
His scoff then grew to a series of loud laughters, causing Inigo to turn his gaze to Matthew. "This bastard doesn't believe me."
Inigo sighed heavily, shaking his head as he already knew this would happen. After all, one was innocent until proven guilty. It was easy to accuse someone, but without hard evidence, everything was just a mere accusation.
"I didn't want to do this," Inigo muttered, shaking his head as he let out another deep sigh.
Without further ado, Inigo slipped his hands inside the back pocket of his jeans. Taking out a small yet thick brown envelope, Inigo opened it and picked three photos.
"One is innocent until proven guilty is the theme today, huh?" Inigo chuckled as he flipped the photos for Angelo to see.
But, with the distance they had -- with Angelo lying in the open coffin six feet under while the two stood on the ground surface -- Angelo could barely see the two figures on the photographs.
"Here is the f*cking evidence, stupid sh*t." Inigo cursed as he tossed the envelope containing tons of pictures along with the three photographs he had taken out.
Slowly, the photographs fell down delicately on the 'open grave'. Angelo unconsciously watched it in slow motion as the rest of the photographs inside the envelope showered on him.
Soon, each photo landed on his body. Angelo managed to clip one with the limited movements of his fingers.
Although his entire body was bound to the casket, Angelo could still do limited movements. Hence, he looked down in great difficulty while holding the picture in between his fore and middle finger.
Angelo blinked, furrowing his brows as his fingers trembled. The two figures in the photographs were the people he was familiar with.
It was a photograph of two people that appeared to be lovers. Inside a cafe, they were holding hands and seemed like it was taken while they were laughing candidly about something.
One would appreciate the photo as it showed their carefree nature and just positive emotions. However, Angelo was certain that the man in the picture had thousands of faces he was hiding beneath.
Nikolai.
The girl in the photo… Angelo swallowed hard as the corner of his eyes could not help but well up. The girl was his little sister whom he loved dearly.
Angelo didn't mind his dirty work and the dangers lurking around him if it means being able to provide her sister with a peaceful life. He loved her, and his sacrifices were nothing compared to the smile on her face.
He would go against the world; he wouldn't let someone off who would dare take her precious smile away.
But…
Angelo felt like someone stabbed him directly in his chest. Why would her sister be with Nikolai? No, the right question was, what was Nikolai doing with his sister?
Nikolai knew Angelo was someone without family. He was just a small living organism in the underworld society who would do anything for money. The reason Nikolai took him under his wing.
There were tons of things to think about. But, Angelo's gunshot wound made it difficult for him to come up with the obvious answer. It slowly clouded his thoughts, limiting his breathing, as sweat broke out from his forehead and back.
"No, no, no…" He whispered, shaking his head lightly as he didn't want to believe his eyes.
"That Zia only thinks about herself. Does she think she's the only one who plans to change the fate of others?" As Inigo watched the in denial expression resurfaced on Angelo's countenance, Inigo muttered through his gritted teeth.
Indeed, Inigo's first move when he returned back in time was to save the people he considered as family. It was true he had massacred the traitors that managed to slip inside his organization.
At the same time, he tried to change other's fate. Just like Angelo's fate who was supposed to die months ago, but Inigo changed it.
The only downside of his actions was that Inigo didn't have the leisure to explain it to them. Not that he didn't try, but who would believe his ridiculous excuse of time-traveling? No one.
Everyone just assumed that Inigo had finally lost it. Good thing Matthew was resourceful and managed to get these evidence.
"Take him out of there and treat his wounds. He would bleed dry." As Matthew studied the change of Angelo's behaviour, he ordered calmly.
Matthew had prepared everything. Hence, he didn't panic as he trusted the people who were in standby to treat Angelo's wounds.
With that ordered, the few reliable men that were around them pulled Angelo's casket up. At the same time, several people carrying a stretcher came into the scene.
As the rescue operation started, Matthew turned his back against them and Inigo did the same. Both of them walk away ever so slowly, keeping their silence.
"I think that was a little harsh." After some time, Inigo broke his silence as he took out a pack of cigarettes.
He clipped a stick of cigarette in between his lips, placing the entire pack back in his pocket, and lit the tip of the cigarette that was clipped on his lips as he walked away.
"Life itself has a cruel humor. If he wants justice, he needs to face the harsh truth. It's all up to him if he thinks the justice that kept him moving forward is worthy." Matthew gave Inigo a side eye, not halting in his steps as he uttered in a blank tone.
"Giving him freedom to decide, huh?" Inigo chuckled briefly, shaking his head as Matthew's actions came off as truly odd to him. Matthew was just unpredictable, at least, in his opinion.
The two continued their pace and neither of them talked after Inigo's last remarks. Once they were in front of the door leading back to the mansion, Inigo halted.
"What now? Going to your lovely girlfriend to adore her beauty?" asked Inigo as he faced Matthew after puffing the smoke of his cigarette.
Instead of answering, Matthew slid his hands inside his suit pocket. When he took it out, a folded note was clipped in between his fingers which he offered to Inigo.
"This is the address where Nikolai and his men stay at the moment. They can't leave the country and by now, Nikolai has figured out that someone has been trying to keep him in this country. Go, play as bait." In a matter-of-fact tone, Matthew tilted his head towards the note and cast Inigo a knowing look.
"Son of a…" Inigo smirked before he snatched the note from Matthew.. "I didn't quite like how you worded your last sentence, but I don't mind paying my little brother a visit."
