Meanwhile, on Zoey and Matthew's side.
The two had arrived at Matthew's other mansion; the headquarters of his men. Zoey and Matthew had traveled in silence as Matthew had to attend some virtual meeting on the way.
Therefore, Zoey held back raising tons of questions hovering over her head. But, as soon as they stepped foot on the mansion's vicinity, Zoey glanced at Matthew.
"Darling?" She called out. Matthew cast her a glance and then hummed.
"Hmm?"
"Since when did Ivan start calling you boss?" Zoey asked, treading carefully while waiting for his response.
Knowing Ivan, it was a bit surprising that he had been addressing Matthew as his boss. Ivan only acknowledged Niko as his boss. Even if it was a joke, Ivan wouldn't joke about that easily.
Now, Zoey was wondering what kind of conversation Matthew and Ivan had. Or, if they already talked about what they should talk about last night.
"I don't know." Matthew gave Zoey a side eye, not halting in his steps.
Zoey furrowed her brows. "You don't?"
"He just started calling me that this morning. We hadn't talked about his new mission, and it seemed it wasn't as urgent as I thought." Matthew explained nonchalantly.
For a moment, Zoey remained silent with her brows furrowed. She cast Matthew a glance as they approached the mansion's front door.
"How about that girl and my brother? Is it fine to keep them?" Zoey inquired, pertaining to Zion and Katherine living in his house temporarily.
"It's better." Matthew uttered and finally stopped in his steps. "You'll understand the reason later."
Matthew said firmly as he faced her. Zoey pursed her lips, nodding in understanding. She needed to trust Matthew, even if she could barely grasp his plans.
With that being said, Matthew and Zoey headed inside the mansion. As soon as they did, Zoey stopped in her tracks.
In the living area, Dredd was there all alone; having the time of its time. When he sensed their presence, Dredd raised its head and let out a low growl.
However, Dredd didn't move nor did it welcome Matthew. Upon recognizing its master, unlike any other pets, it remained unfazed. Dredd rested its head over his paws, opening and closing its eyes comfortably.
"Master!" Just then, Zoey heard Owen's voice from the side.
Instinctively, the two of them turned their heads into Owen's direction.
"Is Jack here?" Asked Matthew without much change in his cold tone.
"Uhh, yeah. The man is trying to kill himself. Good thing we came for him." Owen scratched the back of his head, sighing as if recalling a bad memory.
"He's in the garden." Owen added, pointing his thumb to the direction of the garden.
"Tell Kenneth to come once he's done sulking." Matthew ordered before heading to the garden.
Meanwhile, Zoey glanced at Owen who raised his brows and hands up. "Ma'am, I won't tell you anything even if you put a bullet in my head!"
"Do I look like I need to do that? Why are you acting so guilty?" Zoey cast him a look of disdain, studying him from head to toe.
"Whatever." After scrutinizing him from head to toe, Zoey rolled her eyes and followed Matthew's tracks.
When she left, Owen followed her figure by his gaze. He sighed when she completely left the living area.
"Geez. I thought she'd figure something out about Angelo." Owen heaved a sigh of relief, patting his chest as Zoey's eyes just gave off that she could read anyone's soul.
"Man… that man is still recovering. And that Inigo as well. Damn… are these foreigners that suicidal?" Owen muttered under his breath.
*****
"I wonder if I can recognize who Jack is." Zoey muttered as she was curious what kind of face this jack has.
Was he one of Matthew's legal business associates? Or someone who was working full time in the underworld?
To be honest, Zoey didn't have an idea. She knew a few individuals in the triads. But she knew a lot of faces back in Nikolai's home country. She worked as a messenger, after all.
Soon, when Zoey reached the garden, Matthew was already standing tall. His back was facing her, his hands inside his pockets.
Slowly, Zoey moved her gaze downwards. She furrowed her brows as soon as she laid her eyes on the man bowing in front of Matthew.
As if ancient times, the man was bowing with his forehead touching the lush grass. First impression? Zoey found this Jack to be a coward or perhaps, ambitious.
If a man bowed his head and swallowed his pride, it was either he was afraid to lose his life or was willing to do anything to survive. Either way, he was someone Zoey would never trust her life with.
"Mr. Xi! I didn't intend to cause you any problems! I didn't know she managed to get acquainted with your cousin and that bastard Bai Kenneth!" The man pleaded desperately.
When Zoey heard the man, she furrowed her brows. 'Why does he sound so familiar?' She wondered, walking cautiously as she tilted her head to peek at the man's side profile.
"I was just trying to teach her a lesson! We made a deal and she just brought a huge problem to my operation! Some foreign organization came and hunted us down, one by one! I suffered huge casualties and even my goods were stolen!"
The man bowing in front of Matthew raised his head and looked at Matthew.
Upon doing so, Zoey's eyes widened in disbelief. Of course, she recognized this man. Although he looked like he aged ten times overnight; with the dark bags under his eyes and disheveled hair, Zoey recognized him.
"That woman! That Zhou Zoey! She benefited from the Feng Estate, but what did she do in return? She brought a stolen container of humans to my pier! Now everyone is coming after me!" He exclaimed, rubbing his palms against each other.
"Mr. Xi, please help me just this once!"
Meanwhile, when Zoey snapped back to the current lapse, she gasped. "Cecil?!"
