Chapter 185 - Romance Purposes

Three weeks had passed in a blur. Devon was still recovering with Dion staying with her all day. She couldn't still stand as she had severely broken her legs. Meanwhile, Lewis was especially busy but still visited her every day. Nothing changed from the moment she woke up in this body.

"What a mess," Devon murmured, watching the news regarding the Qin Empire's tax evasion case. "That's a lot of fine."

"I know, right? We might live in the street in the future." Dion nodded while peeling her an apple.

Devon cocked her head in his direction, blinking curiously. "You seem very calm about that."

"Well, panicking will not help, right?" Dion raised his gaze and cast her a knowing look. "It's not like if I panic or cry, things will change. That guy planned to mess with us from the very beginning and we're fools to think that he cares for us."

"Do you hate him? Julian, I mean. Do you hate him?"

His lips parted, but he ended up shutting them close and continued peeling. "I hate what he did. He always had a choice to leave or sever ties with us. If he truly wants to have nothing to do with us, there are many ways."

"True." Devon rocked her head while Dion offered her a slice of apple. "Thank you."

Dion just smiled slightly while watching her eat. He asked her before about what baffled him, and Devon answered with a simple 'back to normal. No more amnesia'. Still, it was hard to adjust to the changes in her personality. The Devon right now was someone who cared less about everything. Although she was fun to talk with, it still felt like he was talking to a different person.

"Have you visited him after the accident?" she inquired after their brief silence, making his brows raise. "That second young master. Did you visit him even once?"

"Yes."

"How was it?"

"I didn't talk to him." Dion shrugged nonchalantly, giving her another slice of apple. "I just went there and see what he was doing, but he didn't talk, nor did I."

"He was probably very shocked he might hang himself."

"He can't even stand." He clicked his tongue, already used by her choice of words by now.

"Anyway, get my laptop. I need to do something or else, I will go cray cray." Devon shrugged and watched Dion set up her laptop on the over-bed table. Since she couldn't leave the bed yet, Devon had been writing her drafts for a new novel. She would go crazy if she stayed doing nothing all day.

"So boring," came out a whisper while staring at the monitor of her laptop. "I missed being a ghost."

Usually, Devon would go to her documents to read the previous chapters she had written. But today, she blankly stared at the screen for a long time.

"Writer's block?" after some time, Dion spoke. He was still sitting on the chair beside the bed, staring at her ever since. He would usually watch her work, so it became a habit.

"No. It just feels wrong."

"Hmm?"

Devon let out a deep sigh as she cocked her head in his direction. "Everything I write feels wrong, that's all. I was trying to write romance, but I was thinking of this twisted twist."

"It's not a twist if it's not twisted." He quirked a brow, tilting his head a little to the side.

"I mean twisted in a way... whatever. You will not understand." Devon let out another deep sigh while shaking her head sideways. "By the way, is your brother coming today? I need him for romance purposes."

"Sis, do you really have to say it like that?" A frown dominated his face. "You always sound like you don't even love my brother. I know you retrieve your memories, but it's like you two had a change of heart after that."

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before looking back at him once again. She tried to make it easier for him to understand because their story was just ridiculous. Quentin and Lewis were different cases because they were "abnormal" — according to her.

"I fell in love with your brother, but that is not me. The person you met in that cafe and the person you babysit all day after that is not me," she explained in a knowing tone, causing his frown to worsen. "Even so, I want to stay with your brother because I don't have a choice."

"That is cruel."

"The world is already cruel enough for me, son. I don't want this as well, but I have no damn choice." She handed her palm to him, wiggling her fingers. When his brows furrowed, Devon rolled her eyes.

"Give me your phone. I need to call your brother."

"But he might not answer."

"Just give it to me." Devon clicked her tongue. Dion frowned but still handed his phone to her reluctantly.

"What is Assistant Wang's name in here?" she asked while scrolling through his contacts.

"The king's right-hand man."

Her nose scrunched up as cast him a look of dismay. She said nothing, though. She was not in the position to judge, as this was better than her habit of not saving people's contact numbers. When Devon found Derek's phone number, she didn't hesitate to send him a message.

[ To: The King's Righthand Man

Assistant Wang, tell my husband to answer my call. Ty.]

Just as Devon sent the message, she didn't wait for Derek to read it as she had already gone to find Lewis' number. It was easy to find Lewis's contact number among all these strange nicknames in Dion's contacts. As soon as she found 'my generous big brother', she pressed video call.

"Sis, you do realize that my brother can be in the middle of an important meeting, right?" asked Dion, staring at her who was holding the phone in front of her.

"Dion, do you know the saying, happy wife is a happy life? If I am grumpy, I might lash out at your brother later."

"Does my brother know you're like this before your accident in the past?"

"He knows, and he still married me. If that is not true love, I don't know what is." Devon cast him a look, shrugging nonchalantly. All he could do was sigh and shake his head. He didn't want to compare, but this Devon right now just do whatever she wanted. Also, she spoke love so thoughtlessly, unlike how she perceived it in the past.

"Suit yourself, then," he mumbled, leaning back while staring at her, waiting for her call to get through.

After her second try at reaching Lewis, he finally answered. Lewis looked at the screen with disinterest, waiting for her to speak. However, Devon didn't speak, but only narrowed her eyes.

"Hmm?" Lewis hummed in a low tone, seeing her expression. "Is there a problem? Or do you need something?"

Devon didn't answer immediately as she studied Lewis's expression. She knew Lewis was exhausted, as he had been working tirelessly and weeping for her every single night. Even though he looked dashing and fine, his stress and exhaustion were clear on his handsome face. She studied where he was and it seemed he was inside the car.

"There is something wrong," she spoke coldly. "Come back here."

"Hmm?" Lewis raised his brows before they furrowed.

"You heard me. I need to see you right this instance." Her tone remained cold and adamant as if she would throw a huge fit if he didn't listen. "Don't you dare tell me I'm already seeing you right now, Qin Lewis. That is not how you talk to your wife."

Dion cringed at the way she talked to Lewis as if he was a pushover. It was like, all along, Devon simply acted cute and kind and innocent at first before baring her fangs. He could not help but rub his shoulders, wanting to cover his ears.

"Don't overthink." Lewis's voice sounded tired with zero energy. "Do you want to eat something? I'll get it for you."

"Wow... you're really coming?" her eyes dilated, a bit taken aback that he didn't even argue with her. "My husband, this is why I don't date mature men. I like to argue!"

"Mhm... is that so?"

Devon frowned, letting out a sigh, as this was pointless. "Whatever. I don't need anything. Just come in here."

"Alright. See you. Love you." Lewis's nodded before cutting the line short. But Devon was frozen in place. She stared at the phone's screen in horror, dropping it on her lap.

"Sister, are you alright?" asked Dion, studying her who seemed to have a system error after hearing Lewis' last remarks. "Are you that horrified to hear my brother saying he loves you? It's already a habit, and it is hard to change a habit."

When Devon recovered from her shock, she ground her teeth as she glared at the phone. "I will throw this away."

"Sis! Wait!" he panicked, springing up to his feet, and grabbed her wrist before she could throw his phone. "What the hell?!"

Dion gasped, seeing the murderous intent in her eyes. She seemed truly furious, and it was surprising that she would be this angry after one remark.

"Sis, calm down, will you? If you hate it that much, just pretend you didn't hear it! My brother loves you, so of course, he will say it! This might be easy for you, but not for him. He needs time to adjust, and he is tired, so he may be a little less cautious!"

"I will kill that husband Qin for making my heart skip a beat. I nearly died." Devon pulled her wrist away, eyes glinting menacingly. "I'll kill him before he kills me."

"Gosh...! Just what kind of twisted processor did your brain turn to?" Dion gasped as he held his phone closer to his chest.. She was like a wild animal who was too cautious to get hurt by humans.
