Chapter 103 - Mercy Kill

After a long day of waiting, Devon waited patiently in front of the door, as it was almost time for Lewis to return home. As she waited, she jumped when Ghost Lin suddenly appeared beside her.

"Boo!" Ghost Lin chuckled, watching her pat her chest as she let out a sharp exhale. "You're like a dog waiting for your owner to come home. You didn't even notice me."

"Have you embraced your character as a ghost? You're getting good at surprising people." Devon exhaled, as her heart was still racing because of it.

Ghost Lin just shrugged before planting her hand on her hips, gazing at the door. "So, how have you been with latecomer Qin?"

"We're good." Devon smiled bashfully as she massaged her nape. Ghost Lin, who noticed her action, arched her brow.

"Elaborate."

"Well, he is my lover now." Devon turned to Ghost Lin, studying the ghost's expression, and was surprised that the latter's reaction was unlike Dion.

Ghost Lin only nodded her head in understanding. "I see."

"You're not surprised?" Devon inquired, blinking to see if the ghost was really nonchalant about it.

"Why would I?" Ghost Lin furrowed her brows as she tilted her head to the side. "You two will end up together without any help, anyway."

"How did you know that?"

"Considering how attached you two are, things will go that way, eventually." Ghost Lin shrugged her shoulder nonchalantly. "I mean, when you bottle up emotions for a long time, it will eventually explode. I just didn't expect it'll be this soon, but oh well, you look happy."

Devon smiled subtly, as Ghost Lin had always told her to be happy. However, there was something different in Ghost Lin's eyes that she noticed.

"You don't look that happy though… if anything, you look a little exhausted." She pointed out.

"Ghosts doesn't get exhausted. What do you mean?" Ghost Lin raised a brow, gazing at her from head to toe.

"I don't know," Devon murmured as she glanced at the door before walking closer to the wall, leaning her back against it. "I just felt like you seem a little off than usual."

Ghost Lin stared at Devon for a bit before her lips parted. "I guess I am. I don't feel it, but I think I am."

"Did something happen in Alaska?"

"Why are you so obsessed with Alaska?" Ghost Lin's nose scrunched up as she only said that in passing. Although she had visited the place, she only went there once!

"Because that's the only place you ever mentioned."

Ghost Lin clicked her tongue before shaking her head sideways. "I was in the Lin's residence to see the situation."

"You were in the Lin's residence?" Her brief explanation made Devon quirk a brow, and Ghost Lin nodded. "Why are you there?"

"Didn't I tell you? You have to visit them and give them a scare one of these days."

Devon nodded ever so slowly. "When do you need me to visit your family?"

"For fuck's sake! They are not my family, alright?! The only living family I have is my grandpa!"

There was a moment of silence between them as Ghost Lin's temper seem to get shorter. Devon pursed her lips and remained quiet.

"Anyway, next week is good, I think." Ghost Lin scratched her temple with a finger. "I will have to brief you first about what you need to know about those little shits."

"Alright."

Ghost Lin let out a sigh as she stared at her. "Sorry. I was just a little annoyed at the thought of them."

"You don't have to apologize. It's my fault for speaking without thinking." Devon shook her head lightly with a subtle smile on her face. "I can also understand since I've known all along that sharing the same blood doesn't necessarily mean they are family."

Devon stared at Ghost Lin for a moment before she asked. "So, did they do something? I need to know that much right now, correct?"

"Well," Ghost Lin floated, bending her knees while doing an angel sit with her palms on her knees. "Those fuckers want to do a mercy kill for my grandpa."

"Mercy kill?"

"My grandpa had been in a coma for a long time. Once he wakes up, things will surely change. Those ingrates are worried about the inheritance even though I severed my ties with them, and want to take away my grandfather's life support." Ghost Lin summarized what she had heard during her stay in the Lin's residence.

"Thing is, if I were in that body, I would just massacre them for real. I don't care if I have to stay in jail for the rest of my life, they're really cruel."

"Ghost Lin…" Devon's eyes softened as she pursed her lips, feeling Ghost Lin's helplessness about the matter. She raised her hand to pat her, but her heart sank when her hand passed through.

Devon clenched her hand before withdrawing it. "I won't let them."

"You shouldn't let them." Ghost Lin raised her head with her eyes glinting. "I mean… never mind, whatever.."

She waved and shook her head. Ghost Lin knew this should be her responsibility, but because of her own selfishness, she gave up on her body. If only she knew how far her family could go, she wouldn't give up on her fight for life until she destroyed the Lin Family.

"It's also my responsibility, Ghost Lin. How can I not protect the only family you left with me?" Devon uttered, a bit disheartened by Ghost Lin's nonchalance. "I wanted to console you and just be there for you, but I can't. So, how am I supposed to repay your kindness if I don't do this much?"

"Well, you're going to meet them, anyway. So, that's that."

"Ghost Lin, you told me you want me to live happily, but I can't be happy knowing that I can't protect the only person who truly mattered to you." Devon expressed wholeheartedly, offering her hand despite not being able to touch her. "Trust me on this one, alright? And let me borrow your courage. We will protect grandpa together."

Ghost Lin stared at her determined face.. "Thanks," she said, placing her hand on top of Devon's palm.
