Halia wanted to reject Emerson. After all, she had never thought of him as anything more than a friend.
But, just as she was about to get the words out of her mouth, Emerson suddenly leaned forward.
In a panic, Halia immediately stepped back, forgetting that she was on the edge of a pool.
Everyone gasped as a loud splash echoed through the night air.
"Haili," Emerson yelled in surprise as he quickly bent down to remove his shoes.
But, as soon as he kneeled down, he heard another loud splash.
"Jackson," Amelie screamed.
Jackson had dived in to save Halia without hesitation. He had been watching from a distance and saw the entire scene unfold.
Jackson searched around in a panic. When he first met Halia in Beijing, he didn't recognize that Halia was the little girl he once saved. But, when Halia mentioned it earlier at the dinner table, he was quickly reminded of the incident. So, as soon as Halia fell into the pool, his instincts jumped in; Halia couldn't swim!
However, to his surprise, when he popped his head up to take a breath, he noticed Halia treading water not too far away. He immediately swam over to check on her.
"Are you OK?" he asked.
Halia looked at the man and nodded her head. She could tell that he cared about her. Otherwise, he wouldn't have jumped in so quickly. So why did he keep denying it?
"After you saved me from the pool at your family home, my father made me take swimming lessons to tackle my fears. He's always taught me to face things head-on. That's why I'm not backing away until you tell me the truth. I know you remember me, so why are you pretending that you don't" she whispered as the man got closer.
"Is it because of Amelie," Halia stuttered.
"If you've chosen her over me, then just let me know. I will respect your decision. I know she saved your life..." Halia continued.
But, just before she finished speaking, Jackson cut in, "If I repay my savior by becoming her boyfriend, then how will you repay me?"
The man's voice was low but charming. "You owe me for saving you as well!"
Halia felt her heart race as she looked at the man. What did he mean by these words? Underneath the starry night sky, this man looked like a mystical being that had arisen from the water.
He was still wearing his suit and his originally styled hair was now sitting flat on his head from the pool water.
Meanwhile, Halia's long black hair was slicked back and slightly floating on the surface of the water. Her white dress and his black suit made them appear like a couple on their wedding day. The man was handsome and the woman was beautiful; they were a perfect match.
Even Amelie thought this as she watched from the side.
At that moment, a staff member arrived with some towels and handed them to Emerson.
"Bro, hurry and help Halia out of the water. She's going to catch a cold!" Emerson yelled.
As soon as Emerson said this, Jackson launched forward and carried Halia in his arms.
"What are you doing?" Halia asked in surprise.
"You heard my brother. He said to help you out," Jackson said as he looked down at the woman.
"Your girlfriend's going to get jealous," Halia said as she glanced at Amelie.
"It's OK, she's very understanding," Jackson replied.
Jackson quickly carried Halia out of the water and over to Emerson. Emerson then wrapped Halia in a towel and asked worriedly, "Are you OK?"
Halia gently nodded her head as she glanced at Jackson. She then watched as the man removed his jacket and shirt. They were soaking wet, so he was better off removing them.
At that moment, Halia noticed the scars on his arm; the ones that she had left on his body. She knew her skills weren't good enough to prevent scarring. But, she also noticed a scar on his chest. Last time, when she was stitching him up, she had snuck a few glances at his body and she was sure that the scar on his chest wasn't there before. So, where did it come from? What happened while he was in France? Wasn't he there for a trial? Why wasn't he in jail?
