Chapter 18: My Wife, Mo Lixin

“Ha-ha…” Ji Nanfeng chuckled. “It’s too lonely at home, right? It’s good to go out every now and then.. do something fun. Buy what you like and go replace the old things in this room.”

“Yes…!” Mo Lixin did not refuse seeing his determination.

The couple did not speak again and all was quiet until his phone rang.

“Third Brother, don’t refuse my invitation! Eldest Brother’s out on a holiday so I want to have a get-together. Unfortunately, Second Brother won’t be able to come… but don’t say you won’t be able to either!” It was the voice of a man on the other end of the line. It was nice, soothing even.

Ji Nanfeng paused and looked at his wife. “Where are you going later?”

“It’s on the other side of Red Square…”

Ji Nanfeng nodded then said to the phone, “I’ll be there!”

And he hung up.

“Lixin, I’ll take you there now. I was just going over there…”

“But… but I… I have an appointment to meet a friend in the afternoon.”

“It’s fine. Spend time with me first. It’s been a while…”

“Aren’t you busy this afternoon?” Mo Lixin looked at her husband in the eyes.

“Ye.. yes… to meet some brothers I haven’t seen in a long time.”

***

Red Square was a well-known, reputable business district in City A. Sky-high buildings reached the azure as many people came and go en masse. It was a district that never slept.

Mo Lixin sat on the passenger seat, heart beating erratically. She was nervous. Ji Nanfeng was set on introducing his wife to his friends.

“Wait a moment here. I’ll go and park the car first,” Ji Nanfeng said.

Mo Lixin nodded and stepped foot out of the vehicle. She looked around her surroundings and realized that it was a place she’d never been to before, no… more like a place she’d never find herself in for it brimmed with luxury from one end to the other. Looking closer, she saw the kinds of men and women entering and leaving were young and probably an entitled offspring or a self-made millionaire, either or.

Suddenly, a pitch-black Porsche Cayenne made its timely appearance. Its arrival was not surprising at the very least given the vibrant luxury of the place.

Mo Lixin looked over and saw the Cayenne veering towards a sharp steel bar. The tires would explode if not careful and the driver did not seem to notice.

It was an act done by instinct alone and she did not know why. Mo Lixin stepped forward in the car’s view and closed her eyes, hands extended at an attempt to stop the vehicle.

Lu Xingyan was on the phone and paid little to no attention to the front. Soon as he hung up did he notice a woman in a red dress. He quickly slammed the brakes, stopping only a fist away.

Mo Lixin’s heart skipped a beat. She was wrought with fear. Goodness… she wasn’t thinking right…

“Little girl, what are you doing? That was dangerous! Don’t you know?” Lu Xingyan hurriedly got out of the car and angrily spat out.

Mo Lixin nervously looked at Lu Xingyan and pointed to the steel bar.

Lu Xingyan followed her finger and saw 4 meters away a steel bar jutting out from the ground. Now he understood. If he drove any further, he’d met an untimely accident.

“Just now, thank you, but that was dangerous! Never take that type of risk again in the future!”

Mo Lixin nodded, regaining her sense of clarity. As she opened her mouth to answer, she was suddenly pulled into the arms of someone.

“Do… do you want to die…?!” Ji Nanfeng burst out, voice croaking.

His heart dropped ever so suddenly and stuttered with shock. He’d never been so afraid than this moment for the thought of losing her again would rip open the sanity that held him together. Mo Lixin… her name would become a constant grief trapped inside his soul, a constant cry in the dark, and a sob he could never release.

He had lived two lives and he sure as hell did not want his first to become a repeat.

He owed his life to her in this life.

“I… I’m fine, you don’t have to worry.” Mo Lixin could feel Ji Nanfeng’s worries from his embrace alone. It warmed her heart. Somehow… this kind of caring love was good, she thought.

But Ji Nanfeng did not answer, only deepening his embrace tighter.

“I’m sorry,” she said shyly, “I’ll pay attention next time!”

“You have to…” Ji Nanfeng finally let her go and whimpered softly in her ear.

“Third Brother?” Lu Xingyan asked with raised brows. Had he seen it right? Half a year had passed since he’d last seen his Third Brother and he never recalled seeing him react so. Ji Nanfeng was a typically expressionless man. Lu Xingyan believed he had facial paralysis and no mountains could move it… but… this, this was new.

“Big Brother…?” Ji Nanfeng turned around and saw the man who almost ran into Mo Lixin was his Big Brother.

“It’s really you. I thought I’d made a mistake.”

“Big Brother, is this how you make an entrance?”

“Err… I would have been here earlier. There was a traffic jam!”

“I see…”

“And this is…?” Lu Xingyan looked at Mo Lixin.

“My wife, Mo Lixin!” Ji Nanfeng exclaimed proudly.
